Extreme Summer Performance - Rounded Shoulder

Hi guys,

Looking to get new tyres at the moment, and I am currently lowered on KW v2's running Alufelgen CS7's.

I currently have 255/35/R18 Yokohama S-Drives on the back, and have not been able to stop them rubbing (even with a fender roll )

To get the rubbing to a minimum, there is a fair amount of negative camber which has made them wear quickly, and also I can feel the traction loss due to not having a good contact patch.

The tyres I was looking at are:
  • Bridgestone RE-11
  • Yokohama AD08
  • Hankook R-S3
  • Dunlop Star Spec
  • Toyo T1R (only if none of these have a round sidewall/shoulder)

When looking at the specs on Tirerack, the Tread Widths are as follows:
  • Bridgestone RE-11 - 9.4"
  • Yokohama AD08 - 9.9"
  • Hankook R-S3 - 8.7"
  • Dunlop Star Spec - No info
  • Existing S-Drive - 9.1"

Does this mean that the Hankook R-S3 may be a good choice as it must have a rounder shoulder as the tread width is less?

The Toyo T1R would be the best choice out of all since they offer the most narrow width and rounded sidewall characteristic.

I never understood why people buy custom wheels and then buy crap Toyo tires because you get less tread than a normal 255.

Why dont you just get a real tire in a 245?

I pretty much agree with a combo of both previous posters. A narrow 255 like a Toyo doesn't really have any more tread contacting the ground than many 245's. But it sounds like you need a substantially narrower tire so the Toyos would be the best choice anyways. Actually I'd bet 265/30 T1r's would not rub, assuming they make that size.

I've been happy with my Toyo T1r's. When I first got my 19 inch wheels with non-runflats the ride was very similar to the stock setup. When I switched to the Toyo's the ride is much better. Wear seems to be good too. I think I might get 20k outta the rears. The Toyo's are fairly soft sidewalled which is probably what some don't like but for me was what I wanted for a daily driver with 19s.

The prior rear Hankook 245/35/19s rears rubbed. I worked on my fenders and removed my backseat and the rubbing was tolerable except with 200 plus pounds of passengers. I don't think my 255/30/19 Toyos have ever rubbed. I'm considering going to 265/30s my next set.

Can't speak of the others, but the Direzza's seem to run very wide! The Hankook V12 Evo Ventus I had before seemed a reasonable width with a fairly square shoulder, but the Dunlop 245 is actually wider than the Hankook 255 AND the shoulder is very square. Based on your needs, stay away from the Dunlops (they are phenomenal tires though).

Agree with the above. Just get a tire that fits. If your running major camber to make it fit and considering round tires to have less tread width, you don't lose anything by going down in size.

I do want a tyre that fits, thats why Im not happy at the moment and asking for opinions on tyres that will help.

I was told the CS7's were great for this car even with a drop, however that hasn't been the case.

I already though about going 245 in the rear, however there aren't any higher end performance tyres are available in this size?

Hankook R-S3, Bridgestone RE-11, Dunlop Star Spec, Yokohama AD08, none of the come in a 245/35/18

I just thought that maybe with the Hankook having a narrower tread than any of those tyres (including the S-Drives) that this may help? And possibly allow me to return the camber to normal so I will have good contact.

What is the amount of camber you are running in the rear? I am at -2* without any problems traction.

unfortunately, your wheels are holding you back, not your tires. if your car doesnt see much track time, you really shouldn't change the rear camber too far from stock... it's just a bass-ackwards way of making tires fit.

Not sure on the camber at the moment, I cant find my alignment specs, but when visually looking at it you can tell its quite a bit more than stock and from memory it was around -2

My aim is if I can get a narrower tyre, I can bring camber back to stock specs. That combined with a better quality tyre (have heard quite a few people not entirely happy with the S-Drive) will also improve the situation.

If I was to change to an S-Drive 245/35/18, the tread width would be 8.8", whereas the 255/35/18 Hankook R-S3 is 8.7". I am not concerned if its a 245 or 255 etc, just want a good performance tyre that will help.

regarding tire selection, i'm also not a fan of the s-drive. it's fine, but very underwhelming. i've been very impressed with the hankook V12 evo for a budget "max perf." tire.

Forget the AD08's as well those tires run a size larger as well....and have a VERY square sidewall....

re-11 would be a good choice. those and the older re01r had quite round shoulder profiles.

Yea after seeing a mates car last night with re-11's it looks like they are alot rounder than the S-Drives and he has no issues with rubbing with the CS7's.

Looks like these may be the way to go
