I actually think this is a function of the human tendency to dislike when we see ourselves in others (in the similar traits way, not in the "ahh laddie you remind me of me when I was a wee youngin like yourself" way). Girls tend to dislike similar girls, perhaps seeing them as competition. If you can get over it, though, those similarities can make you BFF.
