I bought the 18d sDrive as it was a second car and for the first time in 10 years a company car, I wanted it to be cheap on my personal benefit in kind tax.
I have had 2 1 series and 2 E91's so wanted something different, so decided to buy the X1 and go for a manual to keep it cheap. I never expected the 18d to be a rocket, but also knew it would never feel slow. To be fair to it I was quite impressed, it was quite nippy and never got left behind on the road. however I had put a Spider tuning box on my 2007 320d and that made a huge difference, and I could feel the X1 was slower than my standard 320d, so I bought a Spider box off a member used and stuck it on. The difference is very, very big. It now feels quicker than my standard E91 320d, and it feels a lot lighter on its feet too, it revs much more freely and and pulls right up to 4500rpm, however I now use less of the rev range on a daily basis. I removed the Clutch Delay Valve as well, and this has transformed the car more than any tuning box in my humble opinion, the car is so much easier to drive and now the annoying judder can be controlled far easier, the clutch feels light and responsive. We nearly got rid of the car after 4 weeks because of the clutch, a simple 15 minute mod has transformed it. All in all 2 mods that I think anyone should do. I went from a 335i E91 to a 320d E91 and with the same tuning box it was 214bhp on a rolling road, and it felt great, never felt lacking in any way and felt lighter and more nimble than a 330d as well. The fuel consumption is the one area where I have been extremely disappointed with teh 18d, I was getting around 39mpg measured, 7.2l/100km, however I didn't realise the gearing on teh 18d was so different to the 20d, if I had I would have bought the 20d. 18d likes to sit at 65mph, I like to sit at 80mph, at 80mph it is showing 40mpg. The 20d will sit happily at 80mph and return around 48mpg. With the box on I am now averaging 43mpg measured, 6.6L/100km, so a definite improvement. All in all I am very happy with it. |

If you look on e90post hundreds of people have done the mod, same on the 1 series or e46 sites.
BMW restrict the flow of the clutch fluid so the clutch is harder to press down but also means that is comes up slower, so if you just take your foot off the clutch it will not bang and cause wear on the parts. It was brought in when Americans who wanted to drive a 'stick' kept knackering the clutches. But it ruins what is a pretty decent manual 'box. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558362 |

Can you please share what type of mod/chip did you do to get a petrol sdrive 18i to have that kind of power? I know it is common for diesel cars, but haven't heard much for petrol cars. Thanks.

Powerchip is avialable for the 2.0 diesel. Unfortunately nothing for the 2.0 petrol.
For diesel owners here is the website: http://www.powerchipgroup.com/intera...sp?pid=Bmw0332 |

I am wondering if my automatic gearbox installed on my x18d will support 390nm torque if i will install the spider performance box.
they are saying that there should be no problem if you are gentle with the car and you are not abuse of the extra power. that is the reason why I am asking you if you have chipped your cars which have automatic transmission. cheers d. |

I have had the same box on my older E91 320d touring auto and it was fine, if it is pushing it torque wise you usually get some transmission judder, but it was fine.
