Snow handling of all seasons
So I now got a second puncture in my Goodyear's and this one is not fixable sadly (right by the sidewall and leaks air even when plugged). And given the tires worn too much to look for replacing with the same tire (plus they haven't been made for years).
So now I'm stuck getting a second set and wanted to know for those who used these tires in the snow, what your experience was? I'm looking at: BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S, Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06, and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ Otherwise, any other suggestions for high performance all seasons? |

The x1 is generally a stable car. Vancouver's winter apart from the recent snowpocalyse is generally rainy. In my previous mazda6 GT I had a set of Continental DWS. They have been super as far as all season goes. Drove it up to Seymour mtn for skiing and these tires were fantastic. Driving down to Washington and Oregon in winter months the DWS just performed. They were subjected to light snow, slush, rain and some ice and we never felt worried. In dry the grip way get free than my previous pirelli pzeros.
Lasted about 60k km before the 'S' in the DWS faded at which time. Heard good things with the michelin as3 when it first came out. A good friend of mine bought a set from Costco. But recent tirerack long term experience seems to indicate declining performance over time. We ended up adding a set of blizzak ws80 for winter months instead. If you can swing for dedicated winter wheels that would be best else the DWS are the next best thing. With my X1 I am running a dedicated winter set. See my thoughts on them. I have the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ on my x35i and love it. They handle the snow better than I would have ever expected an all-season to.
They're obviously not as good as a true winter tire in snow but the dry performance makes me feel like I'm in the middle of summer on summer tires. |

I use winter tires so I can't give a tire recommendation, but taking a quick look at tirerack.com all three of your choices look to be fairly similarly rated with the Michelin coming out on top.
I've never had a Michelin tire that I wasn't happy with, so personally I'd learn towards it. Or given how close they seem to be just go with whichever of the three you can get the best deal on! |

I can not say on these tires but when we did run all seasons we dumped them after two winters. They had worn down too much to have descent traction for a third winter. After 2.5 years and 15k miles they went to another forum member for a lease return as they were down to 5/32.
Are you going to run these during the winter only and run summer tires otherwise?? I could see that for BC. FWIW We switched to Michelin for both our summer (Pilot Super Sport) and winter (X-ICE XI3) tires. |

Running only one set of tires at the moment. I do have a set of rims collecting dust but winters in Vancouver are just too mild to buy a winter set (this winter was pretty bad and even there I had no issues).
In the end had to go with BFG's as that was the only thing available on my size and even then had to go to Bellingham as there was nothing locally and I couldn't wait on account of losing 6 psi overnight. On the bright side finally got to see what my tire plugs looked like on the inside and was pretty impressed with them. Even the tire tech thought they were cool. So if you're considering something like it then I can definitely recommend. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0006NE3KE/ |

Did you get it from discount tire in Bellingham? Popular choice of Canadians. They even price match tirerack.
Did the bitter agents bother you? |

Got it at Costco it was only like $3 more per tire than tire rack so didn't bother with price matching, and this way I get coverage through Costco in Canada. Had to roam around the store for two hours though.

I didn't even realize there was a Costco in Bellingham! Was it the G-force A/S's you got?

RAn the Conti DWS on my Saab, when brand new they were pretty good in the snow and ice but as they worse, it got tricky to say the least.
Even brand new though, they are not even close to being as good as my half used $300 for a set, blizzacks. |

I quite like their new location on Bakerview. Alot less congested than the old Guide Meridian spot. Didn't you go walk over to Fred Meyer to kill time? Good to know Costco Canada would honour Costco US' tires.

Yeah Costco has always been great with warranties and service, one of the main reasons I keep going back.
And it was really coming down so we didn't have much choice of walking outside the Costco |

Yeah I'll look around on Craigslist. But we're not planning any trips for the rest of the season, and with the expense of new tires already I'll probably have to wait till next season

I personally think performance all seasons are dreadful in snow. you better hope roads are plowed and salted.
I also wouldn't trust my local Costco for tires. Their techs are a bunch of buffoons and apparently no experienced/qualified manager above them. Go to a real tire retailer. |

I agree. I could not get to work on two occasions because all the slight uphills were full of cars with all seasons that could not make it, even with all wheel drive.

I'm mostly comparing to my previous tires: Goodyear Assurance Tripletread A/S, and so far the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S is a bit better though I haven't tested it in winter conditions as most of that melted away by the time I got them.
Plus we don't get much snow here. The only thing I'm worried about is a mountain pass on the way to a ski resort we like, but that's always been well maintained. I still might spring for dedicated winter tires next year |
