Just to reiterate my problem. My 2014 x1 uses buttons on the fob to lock and unlock the doors. To operate the car the fob must be inserted in the slot in the dashboard. The batteries in both fobs are new but neither works. To open the car I have to pull out the metal key inside the fob. This car does not open merely by having the fob near the car as that as not part of this cars functionality. I have tried starting the car and pulling fob out again before restarting but that does not seem to reset the fob. Need some ideas besides replace batteries please.

After week or two the buttons will not open and lock doors on fob. Mine's hit and miss, same with starting the car without insertion. My wife fob works every time and I've never replaced the battery on her fob.

You may want to read a post in the F48 X1 thread (key won’t lock/unlock car). Apparently the owners manual says hold the back of the fob against the steering column, suggest you just PM the guy. Car doesn’t recognize the fob and it resets it but this is F48 X1 and I didn’t see any mark on the steering column like the post mentions but chances are its a general issue with fob’s. The only issues I’ve had (mine are comfort access) are theywill not open the car if they are next to my iphone in my M235 or E48 X1, it just blocks the signal. Had trouble with mine also in my X1 until I charged my car battery for a solid day.

This worked for me
You need to reset your BMW key. Press and hold the "Unlock" button on your key. Press the "Lock" button on the key three times. Your key is now reset and should function properly. or try, I personally did not try this method. BMW Key Resync Method 2 Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position I. Then turn the key to position 0 and back to 1. ... Remove the key from the ignition. Press and hold the unlock button. While holding the unlock button press the lock button three times.

My wife's spare key died. I just replaced the battery and it will start the car but the buttons to lock/unlock/trunk do not work. I've tried starting the car and having them magically work again and I've tried the holding unlock while pressing lock 3 times over and over. Nothing. Anyone have other tips to share?
