Help - Need your input if you've got 19's on your X1
I have posted on bimmerforums asking about transfer case problems/noise issues so this is somewhat related. Please read the following so you can get better idea of what is happening.
I have a 2013 x28i. Came with factory 17's and run flats. About a month ago I bought Niche Wheels Targa with some unknown tires "Zenna UHP" 225/40/19 8.5 fronts, 255/35/19 9.5 rears (recommended by installer). I went with those tires because, 1. I wanted to get rid of the run flats 2. It's for my summer wheels/tires only, hence only for use for few months. 3. Seemed like a good idea to not spend tons of money on tires if just for 5 months out of the year. (I am not opposed to spending more on tires, just that at time installer did make a good argument that no customers have ever had issues/complaints and the tires are only for a few moths.) So why do I need your help if you've installed 19's on your X1?? Because I have a mystery noise that I can't seem to nail down and the dealership blames the rims/tires as a cause of possible transfer case problem. I took it in because of a humming noise that is audible at around 10mph and then sounds like highway tire noise at higher speeds. When I took to dealer to have it diagnosed, they claimed the transfer case was bad, they replaced under warranty. As soon as I drove off, the noise and problem was obviously still there. Now, I don't know what real transfer case symptoms/problems are like since my vehicle never gave me any trouble whatsoever other than the strange noise. No lights, no codes, no grinding horrible sounds, just that low hum starting at 10mph. Dealer claims my rims/tires are the cause and we decided to do a swap. Put stock rims/wheels back on my car and put my new wheels/tires on another used X1 same model as mine. When I drove the other X1 with my wheels, the noise was just as it was with my car. When I drove MY car with factory stock, the noise was not. Dealer concluded my wheels and tires are the problem and the dealer claims my transfer case will be ruined eventually. So my request for you guys on this board is if you have had 19's installed, what brand wheel/tire combo do you have? If you have had any problems mechanically especially with the transfer case? What are some clear transfer case symptoms? Do you recommend a different tire or smaller wheel combo? What else can I do to eliminate the possibility of this being transfer case noise?? I'm pretty disappointed because I love the look of the new wheels and would rather not have to go back to original 17's. Thank You for taking time to read this rant. BTW, I'm located in Stamford CT if anyone here has a trusted BMW mechanic that can put an end to this mystery. |

More than likely it's not the wheel, but the tires. I had those tires before and they're pretty decent, however, maybe a bit noisy.
I have stock 19s on my 2014 with different tires with no noise so that doesn't help your cause. Your transfer case won't be ruined with those specs of tires, they are within the safe range of OEM specs. Get different tires and see if it fixes your issue. |

Probably just tires noise. Each tire brand/model has different noise level, check reviews online if this seem to be an issue with this tire model.
I have 19" OEM wheels (https://cdn.bmwblog.com/wp-content/u...ive-16d-19.jpg) with BFG G-Force A/S (255/35R19 & 225/40R19) on my X1 28i xDrive 2012. BMW xDrive M model come with the same wheels + tire dimensions, so no issues. |

So far the consensus is that is my noise 'may not be' related to transfer case ruined by wheels/tires? |

Well there's an easy way to check... get a square setup in the same tires on the same wheels.... probably not the cheapest way to check though lol
Edit: actually you could also measure the circumference of the two wheels - depending on how far off they are that could give you an indication... |

The tire sizes he spec'd are within 0.4% of each other, BMW specs up to 6.0-7.8% wheel difference for xdrive before problems . I would never go that high but I assume they spec for doughnuts...

Hunter roadforce of less than 7
I was also told by a trusted BMW mechanic (not from my dealer) that the wheels and tires must balance out using the Hunter Roadforce machine with a rating of 7 or less. Anyone else can chime in on that?

Thanks - I didn't figure on it being the cure, rather another clue in this mystery. I'll have some audio I recorded while driving on using my iPhone, hopefully it will give a better idea of the noise.

And I'm thinking to take them off and measure - accounting for the specified tire pressure, wear, and mounting wheels. Just reading the tire manufacturers specs won't give you that information. Also, doughnuts aren't meant to be on for very long so they might not cause damage strictly due to not having suffocating time - same with flat RFT's |

And indeed I'm hoping it is cheap tires. Cheap tires I can replace easily, but something worse I don't want. Please continue to chime in members with 19's... thanks. |

Same setup I had as well, no noises with the V12. You can also look into Sumitomo HTRZ III, I have those on my 5 series 265/295 setup, quietest and comfiest tire to date next to Michelin PS series. I then went with M4 wheels with 255/35/19 and 295/30/19 no noises other than normal road noise using the V12 Now I am going with a 19x9.5 sqaure setup using 255/35 Sumis or 265/35 Federals.

Update
I'm fairly convinced its tire noise. I've scoured the internet looking for transfer case grinding noise and what I hear does not sound like that at all.
Question now is, do I keep these tires on for next few months and then worry about it, or do I get some new ones as per your suggestions. I have vacation coming so more than likely the tires will wait. BTW - if anyone has some codes or other things that a 'failing' transfer case would generate, including noises, please send my way. I have zero faults/codes and no grinding noise from Transfer case just that annoying hum starting above 10 mph. (see my previous posts) |
