It's burning oil :(
'13 E84, N55, 35k mi. 6 months and 5k mi. since purchase, oil level is almost down to minimum. Not completely shocked, but a bit surprised. Haven't read about this particular engine burning oil. Assume warranty covers topping off oil, so I'll inquire at the dealer. Just curious if anyone else has an oil thirsty N55.
Edit. Of course, a little googling revealed a quart every 3-5k mi isn't unusual... Last edited by MajorTranq; 04-13-2016 at 09:47 PM.. |

On my s28i 2.0 liter I never see the oil monitor move down.
I changed the oil myself at 4800 miles, and it might have been half quart low, but no monitor move. Does the monitor ONLY move to show 1 quart low? |

Strange you haven't heard anything or read anything because BMW Turbo 6 Cyl are well known for that kind of behavior.
Turbo 8 cyl are also oil consumer. I think it has to do with the high compression ... So you should start to accept it. I don't think BMW or your dealer will give you free refill even under warranty. BMW has already stated in the past that this behavior is by desing for those engines. By the way, Porsche, Subaru and Audi all have the same " problem " with Turbo engines. Don't think you have any choice here but to add some oil when needed. Curious though that the N20 engine which is also Turbo doesn't have the issue. I have the N20 on a 28i Xdrive and never had to add oil at all ... At least you can enjoy the performance !! A hell of an engine. Don't sweat it ... Enjoy it ! Have a nice day. |

All of my non-turbo BMW 6 cylinders used oil too...

Good place to get oil answers is BITOG. com.
Any engine using only 1 quart in 3k-5k miles is golden. Dealerships don't want to talk about fixing it unless it's around 1 quart in 500 miles or more. I had an F150 v-8 that burned 1 quart in 700 miles and went to 175k, then, 1 quart in 100 miles. |

Well ... This is news to me. Good for the owner if it's managed that way but I was under the impression that oil change wasn't the same as "top up" in the maintenance plan ... Hope you're right. |

Good top up oil, and for that matter oil change oil: Mobil1 0w40; made for hot running German cars (meets the spec).
Mobil 1 has 5 quart rebate get $12 back going until last of May 2016 which makes it dirt cheap. That oil is about $20+/quart in Germany, but sometimes $25/5 quarts at Walmart. Americans get the best fuel and oil deals of the world. |

Gas is also a fluid . But yeah, a couple free quarts of oil before warranty expires will be appreciated. If not, no worries.
Burning a little oil isn't a problem. It's just a change. In 35 years I've not added oil to any of my cars (all Toyotas, except the jeep which I didn't keep long.) |

Never had to top up the oil in any of my previous cars ... None of them were performance cars though ... So this is why you and I are not familiar with this I guess ... |

one other idea to check on is the valve cover gasket. I had an E89 Z435 (N54 engine) that at around 12k miles seemed like it was using oil, but really, it was leaking it from the valve cover gasket

Hi,
I also got an oil burning problem coming from a leak around the turbo. I purchased a 2012 BMW X1 28i xDrive one month ago and got a bad luck : there's dark smoke coming from the exhaust on every cold start. So I took the car to a good indie BMW mechanic to have it checked and that's what he found : There's an oil leak around the turbocharger and it's coming from either the oil line or both the oil line and the turbo. Work estimate of 7 hours (87.50$CAD/h). My question is, should I take a chance and replace only the oil line for 50$ a piece (and potentially needing to replace the turbo later, paying the 7 hours of work again) or should I replace both parts at the same time ? I was quoted 2750$ for a new turbo. Thanks for your input! PS. I wasn't sure if I needed to start a new thread or just reply to this one. |
