Rear hatch glass opens separately?!
OK, I was thumbing through the BMW X1 sales literature and came across this caption:
REALLY? Is this available on all X1 models and in all markets? How do I open the rear glass? Or is this a typo or case of overzealous/clueless marketing department again (like the mythical xDrive28i overboost feature)?

Overboost exists. Not in your market. The rear glass opening separately must be a myth. It would be a nice feature though.

Maybe they just meant that the rear passenger windows open and just poorly worded it.

Sounds like they meant to say "rear seat will open" instead of the rear window. Just because they show the back seat in the picture with the rear seat split, to reach in the rear to get small items out or in. IMHO

I don't think the rear glass in the E91 or F31 opens separately from the hatch. Another thing that bugs me with the X1 literature, it says it had a centre armrest in the rear. Not in sport/M sports.... but the literature when I read it didn't disclose that bit of info. Would be nice to have a centre armrest in a $50k car.

So you have 60/40 folding rear seats? Mine are 40/20/40 msport.
There's only two manuals with or without idrive. It'll be difficult for them to print manuals for different optioned cars. It's a $30k car not $50. It's the base price what counts not options. |

Starts at $36990 in Canada. I have the 40/20/40 rear split seat as well. If you look at the X line, they get a centre pull down armrest that the rest of us don't get. I'm pretty sure that 20% section of rear seat would be identical throughout all the model lines. So why the X line is the only model which gets an armrest is beyond me.

Nothing past rear passenger windows open except for the boot.
Twix I too have rear seat armrest with cup holders. I got m sport. It's in 'storage compartment package' but it should be standard equipment not optional for any line (at least as per the AU specification guide)

Anyhow, there would be stupid people driving an X1 too, hurting themselves and suing the manufacturer. So I'm not surprised it's not an option on any newer BMWs (as far as I can tell). I'm surprised that they still allow the hood to slam, and not stop three inches before closing like many other cars, and having to be pushed down the last bit. But then again, perhaps the stupid people don't open the hood anyhow, so it's less of a problem? |

Note: In the photo the center armrest does not appear to have cupholders.
Then again, I'd give up the rear cupholders for glass that opens in the hatch door. I had it on my 5 series touring and used it a lot!

That's not the armrest. The armrest folds down from the 20% section via a little cloth loop. It does have cup holders and what not, I'll take a pic when I get to the dealer today if they have an X line car on the lot.

I have an e91 and you can open the rear window (small latch next to rear wiper) OR open the complete rear door. Maybe they carried over the 91 marketing info. along with the chassis bits....(sarcasm)
