N20 Oil change thread
Starting DIY oil change thread. N20 specific because that's what I have. The goals are - to help DIYers with the procedure and find part sources cheaper than dealer's.
Well, since I have only 400 miles on the car it is too early for the first oil change. Will be doing it in a month or too. With pics. Check later. However stopped today at the dealership and got an oil filter. BMW p/n 11427566327. Inside there is a filter manufactured by Mann. P/n HU816. Above mentioned BMW p/n is the new one. Some website mention 11427541827 that is supposedly obsolete. Two o-rings and crash washer included too. See pictures below. Checked Amazon. And found Mann HU816 X filter. It appears to be the same filter. However cannot confirm at the moment. The picture actually shows the filter with HU816 on the side. No "X". Going to order it soon. Most likely it is the same. For half the price. http://www.amazon.com/Mann-Filter-HU...dp/B001DRHMRI/ |

There seems to be another N20 oil filter BMW part number 11 42 7 634 292 and reads HU8002 on the top.
You can get oil filters AND oil very cheap here: http://www.partsvp.com/products/SET-...%252d292).html http://www.partsvp.com/products/SET-...52d327%29.html The website might look a little shady, but I have ordered from them twice and they are actually a BMW dealership. Pretty odd, but it looks like many different part numbers work in our N20 engines. On RealOEM it shows:
11427634292 for N20 up to 1/2012 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=11&fg=30&hl=6 and 11427566327 for N20 from 1/2012 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...=11&fg=30&hl=7 Damn, I wonder if they are interchangeable or not... |

Finally oil change time. Part 1 - wrong filter.
Finally the car has more than 3000mi. Got the car on the ramps. Looked at the drain plug. Damn! Just what I was afraid of. The N20 in my car has plastic pan and plastic drain plug. The filter that I got from the dealership couple months ago has a crush washer. Back then they told me that X1 does not have plastic pan when I asked.
Off I go to the dealership again. It took the guy awhile to come up with the right filter. Actually the filter is the same - it just has a plastic plug in the kit instead of crush washer. Here is the part number - 11427640862. See pics of the filter and the drain plug. |

Part 2 - oil change
Changing oil is easy:
1. Use belt wrench or another wrench to remove filter cap. 2. Pull old filter from the housing. Replace two o-rings on the cap. 3. Undo the drain plug (10mm hex ). 4. Replace the drain plug. I reused the old one. The o-ring on it seemed to be OK. Will check for leaks later. 5. Install new filter and put the cap on. 6. Fill with oil. It takes 5-1/4 quarts. Start the engine. Done. |

After reading this thread I went to change my oil prepared with the plastic drain plug. Turns out that my 08/12 build has a good old fashion metal drain plug and pan. Luckily the shop I was changing my oil at had the whole assortment of crush washers. I filled with 5.5 quarts and computer had it right at the full mark.
With the access door to the drain plug that opens simply by turning one screw, this is by far the easiest car I've owned to change oil on. No need to remove an entire engine tray held on by several bolts and screws to get to the drain plug and no need to remove an engine cover to get to the filter housing. At 4800 miles, I did this change, poured the 0w40 5 quart jug in, and the gauge said right on full mark.
I also see here 5.25 quarts, 5.5 quarts, all on the gauge, and my car never used any oil as shown on gauge. So I guess I'm happy that it looks like I drained at least 4 quarts out, but I'm still wondering what it takes for the N20 engine to decide to tell you it needs some. |

I've heard numbers all over the map for oil quantity in the N20 with most being 5-6 qts range. 7 qts is way higher than any number I've heard. Do you change your own oil? Your computer is happy with 7 qts?

The oil minder showed full. It would appear that my oil minder doesn't work to show the at least 1 quart use. If the drained and reinstall # is 7 quarts, that would mean I used 3 quarts in 4800 miles which would be ok, too. I drove really hard on track and got up to 229 deg f, but could drive easy on eco pro, and see 234 deg f. Over fill is a big no no since it will foam. I think the oil capacity might be 7 quarts when filled new, but the oil cooler holds 2 quarts that won't drain. |

When you take your car in for it's reg. oil change, let me know how many quarts they use.
AFAIK, it's been 7qts on N20. Oil temp on track has nothing to do with the amount of quarts in the car but rather the type of oil. |

I wouldn't necessarily assume what a service manager puts on an invoice is the same as what a tech actually used. It they put in 6.1 qts they are going to charge you for 7.0 qts.
FWIW, after 2500 mi of driving after filling with 5.5qts, my computer still registers full. |

I completed an oil change on my X1 28i today. These instructions were perfect. I had the plastic drain plug and a new one came with my oil filter so I did replace it and the two orings on the oil filter cap. All the seals looked brand new but I had the new ones so why not. I did my best to measure the amount of oil I took out of my completely cold X1 and it was around 5.5 quarts but I did spill a bit, so I am guessing the capacity is closer to 6.5- 7 quarts. I added 6.5 total and the gauge reads at the max line.

Just did the second oil change. Used oil measured 5qts. Meaning that N20 burns about 0.25qts per 3000mi. Filled it with 5.5qts which seems to be the right amount.
All this time the oil measurements showed MAX. The electronic oil level system is POS as far as I can tell. Does not show the difference of 0.5qt at all. |

As a DIYer, I would think that should be part of the service/instructions.. |

Changed my oil today @ 3000 miles...SUPER EASY. Drove up on RaceRamps, slide underneath, dropped the access panel and drained the oil. (17mm socket for the aluminum plug on the x28i) I like how the drain plug is on the rear of oil pan, so you can be on an angle/ramp and drain out all the oil vs. trying to level it.
I measured just over 5 quarts drained out, so only added 5 1/2 quarts of Castrol Edge 0W30. OBC measured full after start-up. Probably the easiest change of the six BMW's I've owned over the years. ** I did notice some metallic sparkles in the drained oil pan, so it wasn't premature to change it IMO.

5.3 l removed here
I did my first oil change yesterday at 4,000 K (2,600 miles). I then carefully measured the oil I drained: 5.3 l (5.6 quarts). No particulates or such seen.
FYI, I was surprised to find a steel drain bolt and steel pan on this April-May 2014 build X1. Even the BMW parts guy had it figured for a plastic plug. Seeing the steel plug and pan made me quite happy... |
