Current owners, how well does the AC/ heat work?
Wondering if the lack of rear vents means that anyone in the back seat suffers lack of cooling or heating?
As much as I like the car I am concerned that when its very hot or cold it will take too long to cool off/heat up the back seat for the baby. Even when there are rear vents it can take awhile to cool off a hot car,,especially with a big open greenhouse like a wagon/SUV I imagine. Any feedback from those who have lived with the X1 through extreme temps, especially hot and sunny, would be much appreciated. |

Have not had any extremes of heat or cold since delivery, but did test drive 2 dealer demos (28 and 35) in September when it was in the high 90's here in Texas, and the a/c was excellent for the front seats. Both demos had been baking on the dealer lot before our test drives. Regrettably have no idea how well it cools the rear seat passengers. Sub freezing temps due in next few days, so will be able to report on heating soon.

I noticed your post in the X3 forum that you also have an X3 35i M Sport (didn't notice your sig until now) I am currently debating between that and the X1 35 M Sport and having the hardest time figuring this car purchase out. Things like this lack of rear vents are a mark against the X1, and the trunk not really being practically bigger then the E90, but it stays in the running due it's handling. Test drove a loaded X3 today and it felt softer and more disconnected even with the m sport and dynamic dampening. It's a nice car no doubt I'm just not used to the SUV thing I guess. Perhaps i just need to adapt - it would be more practical considering the kiddo. But hard to dismiss the better steering /road feel etc of the X1 |

Works well for us in Australia. Tinting of windows really helps with the inside temp. Ours also comes with auto down on the windows from the key fob. Note black leather and vermillion red so can get hot.

This has been discussed about 20 times but there are vents under the front seats for the back. There is a photo in one of the original press releases and I can verify there are definitely vents aimed towards the back directly under the seats.

Thanks for the info everyone. It helps to find out how well it works in real world circumstances. Having the pretty big/tall rear facing car seat complicates things a bit too as it might impact air flow from the floor

Not that you're likely to get similar temperatures, but we were having a proper cold spell before going on vacation (-23°C or so) and the X1 did pretty well.

It seems fine here, where it's been in the 20's the last few days. It's a similar setup (with a larger interior) to our old 135i, which worked really well. We have tinted windows, but never noticed it got warm this summer. This wouldn't be something I'd worry about.
If you want to talk about an anemic heater and a/c, go drive a Z3 Coupe or M Coupe, mine was awful in anything over 90 or under 30. If you were sitting still, the climate control was pretty much doing nothing, and moving, it was still pretty weak. In the words of JC (Jeremy Clarkson, not that other guy), 'it's like there's an asthmatic midget under the dash with a straw, blowing cool air'. |

Heat problem...
Recently I've had a strange issue, adding with an EVEN STRANGER RESPONSE from the dealer:
Issue: No heat air blowing, even though front defrost is working (also Inspection warning sign on) Dealer says: drive the car for an hour, it's a battery issue! He said The X1 has 25000 km. How come it's a battery issue while everything else is working like normal? Also the dealer said, "don't come here!" I wasn't impressed! |

I hate hearing stories of poor service from BMW centers. Call the center's customer service manager as well as BMW corporate and complain. This actually carries a lot of weight. They get dinged if the customer doesn't rate the experience 10/10.
I've had nothing but positive experiences but I also have over 10 dealers in a 25 mile radius so I can always go somewhere else if I am dissatisfied. There is something to be said for competition. |

Actually, there are rear vents, under the front seats. In the last two yeras I drove the car on the temperature range from -17 to +40 Celsius, heating and cooling was fast, without ecccesive air flow, de-fogging of windscreen in seconds, and kids on the back seat never complained about the temperature. It seems to me that heating on the legs from under the seats is more comfortable than blowing from the central tunnel vents, like in some other cars.
