Run Flat Puncture Repair
Had my first Run Flat Tyre experience yesterday, with the Tyre Pressure Monitor reporting a loss of pressure in the right rear tyre. There was a service station nearby so I pulled in and checked the pressure which was 224 (normal pressure is 280). Inflated the tyre to the correct level and called into the local Tyre Service centre (Bob Jane T Mart).
They took the tyre off and discovered a small tack had embedded itself in the tread. After some debate they decided it could be safely repaired. The tyres are Goodyear EffecientGrips, and the Goodyear website states that punctures in the tread can be repaired (but not the sidewall). The repair cost $30 ... I’m reasonably comfortable they have assessed the situation properly, and have the comfort that the Tyre Pressure Monitor will soon let me know if there are any further problems. I did take out tyre and rim insurance, so possibly entitled to a new tyre, but there is a limit to the claims so best to save the entitlement up for a catastrophic failure, and it seems senseless to throw away a tyre which only has travelled 3,500 km. |

1 week ago I had a loss of pressure, I had a small puncture (probly a nail, which was not found), took it to the most cheap ass tire repair. Cant even call it a shop here in Mexico it is very used to have this horribly looking tire repairs, but very efficient lol. they had all the automatic gear to remove and replace the run flat tire. Detected the small puncture, and applied a patch. Costed me 2 USD. Lovely. And yes I have the insurance but will only cover until 50K.

32000 k on mine in roughly 18 months, running like new.
Although I must admit the BMW dealership handling of the regular 30k scheduled maintenance was less than impressive... Got the car after 24H (they did provide a Mini Cooper D as a spare, free of charge, after much insistence) but the X1 wasn't even cleaned up or vacuumed inside... My Renault dealer used to do better when I left my Laguna for a 2-hour sched service... A bit disappointing...

Ok, went on a trip to the Kruger National Park - hit some horrific dirt and gravel roads that put my heart firmly in my mouth and...my runflats have kept the faith - no pressure loss, plus my X1 was four adults up. The Pirellis seem quite robust so far.
I did drive slowly and carefully though, unlike my cousin in his Freelander and proper 4x4 tyres who sped like a demon. |

I have just replaced my Freelander 2 with an X1 28i but I have not yet driven it enough to tell if I'll drive faster on bad roads. Almost all roads are fairly bad here so I probably will drive about the same. Still, I wish it did not have run-flats!
