X1 vs E91 328xi
Has anyone driven both and can comment on the handling? I like both but i want to get the one that handles better. The X1 is not yet released in the US so i don't have the chance to test drive both. I might be ordering a 2011 E91 x drive M sport if it in fact handles better than the X1.
thanks for the help |

I have not driven the E91 xDrive - but you will probably experience that the 3 series have slightly better normal road handeling capabilities if you drive like a crazy. The X1 is taller - something between a SUV and a normal touring. The X1 have higher ground clarence - about 2 inches, and can be used on more rougher road conditions. The interior compartment feels larger in the x1 and the rear luggage compartment is a bit smaller compared with the touring.

We test drove the X1 (in 2wd form) and the E91 (2wd) - both 2.0L diesel, both in many ways, the same.
The height of the X1 will mean that the 320 or E91 will be the better in a corner than a taller X1 but our decision to get an X1 was down to access for passengers - the height of the X1 just made it easier for our needs. As for a 2.8 or 3.0 AWD E91 in itself....... I just wish they sold it in the UK!

I actually went to BMW to buy a 320D, but left with a X1 23.
In Australia, the 320D costs about 5k more than the x1 (is slightly better fitted out). I do not care for Xdrive (no snow, very little rain, no curves) but the main +ve was that fantastic twin turbo diesel motor. The E91 is also very late in its model life and in 2yrs time I will be disappointed. If the choice had both cars with the same motor and same price, and the same model age, I would choose the 3 series tourer every time. In terms of handling, the tourer is better, but the X1 is very good and about 1 million times better than the X3. Taking this all into account, I am very happy to be waiting for my new X1. Also people in Australia - MAKE SURE YOU DON'T PAY LUXURY CAR TAX ON YOUR ACCESSORIES IF YOU BUY A DIESEL (<7 l/100km = LCT goes from $57k to $75k). |
