X1 voluntary oil change in dealer pricetag?

Hello all,

My X1 is only 3400 miles and I'd like to change its oil in my nearest BMW dealer. But what's surprising is that after i couldn't find my vehicle on their online appointment registration, I email to service department and asked for its quote too. I was replied with $167 for an oil change and oil filter.. Has anyone tried going in for oil change before the mileage due? Seems abit high for only oil change + filter change? because I looked into their website and it was price tagged at $79 for a 3 series oil change + filter change..

Any thoughts?

thanks

Value service on (I believe) E46 3 series. Not sure why its half price on those (are they using cheaper oil/filters?) or do they just want to incent the older car owners to keep coming to the dealer (my guess)

BMW didn't specify synthetic oil for non-M cars until around 2002, so I'd guess the cheaper quoted price is for regular, non synthetic oil. If you're doing a non-covered oil change, you don't have to do it at the dealer. I paid for oil changes between each warrantied one with our 135i, but have decided to skip doing that with the X1 as there's little supported reasoning for doing it.

I don't quite get it why not do it too with the X1? lol..

By the way, they use Castrol brand right? I guess it makes sense why its so highly price tagged -- synthetic..

Will they reset the original service due (at 10k miles I believe?) if I decided to change the oil voluntarily? If not, then I would be better off with non-synthetic oil don't you think?

Why would you intentionally run non-synthetic? With current engine temps on turbo charged, DI engines, I wouldn't go near dino-oil.

I did Blackstone tests on the 1er and have seen plenty of results from 15k mile oil changes and there just isn't enough evidence to make me think it's worth spending the additional money. Whatever makes you comfortable though, what I do shouldn't really influence you at all.

Finally, maybe I'm not understanding what you want to do, if you simply want to do a low mileage oil change and then continue on with the regularly scheduled oil changes, yes, then reset the oil service counter. If you want to double up the oil changes, then leave it where it is.

My dealer runs oil changes all the time for $99-$129 for all BMW's. my 335i was under $129 and I wouldn't ever pay more than that for an X1 or 335. They did my sons 2000 528i with synthetic oil for $99.

The dealers around here run $79 specials all the time for all BMWs. Just got the oil lube done on our 2009 128i for $79.

The dealer will change your oil every 11k miles or every year the date you purchased your car.

I strongly suggest going to your local BMW Indy, which they charge less than what the dealer is asking for ~

They just replied. Apparently the $79 special is only for 3s and X5 on this particular dealer.. Gonna try to look up at other dealer since you mentioned some dealer have that special for all BMWs..

Thanks!

Whether it's worth doing also depends on how you've used the car. If you've done some hard driving, especially with the engine colder than you would like, you might want to change the oil and filter sooner.

I'm a little confused. You don't want them to reset the counter--that oil change will be free, why put it off? Also, if your goal is to protect the engine, why would you deliberately drain synthetic and put in dino?

Just my first reaction...

The oil change at 3400 the owner must pay for and the dealer will reset it. Oil changes are based on the computer saying its time or one year. I believe if your paying for it at 3400 miles you might be able to get a free one at one year. BMW/Mini has changed their policy a few times and I had a run in with Mini over this issue. Mini got so many complaints they went back to the original program about two years ago which is computer based or one year. I think they had a legal issue because the owners manual said " you Must change your oil every year". I went in at one year and they said my computer said I didn't need it yet and they made me pay for it. Needless to say I went batshit crazy and obviously so did a lot of people so they changed it. It's always best to call the dealer you plan on getting all your work at because they can all get a little weird every now and then and change the policy.

Well, for starters, I'm just moved into the US not long ago.. I was from the Asia region, so I was used to the dino instead of synthetic ones.. Sorry for the confusion.

From where I come from, a year per oil change is kinda stretched don't you think so? Well I guess BMW is so sophisticated, it gets moody sometimes lol!

In Canada at least, the free "scheduled maintenance" is computer mileage based, or once per year, whichever is the shorter time frame. I literally just re-confirmed this with the dealer at the weekend as I was booking the wife's car in for service and she's sitting at about 9,000km after a year.....it's still classed as scheduled maintenance for her.
