Aftermarket Window Tinting

Hi all,

Have been the proud owner of an F30 335i in EBII since late July. I chose to politely decline the dealers offer of "only" $750 to tint the windows since I have had all my previous cars tinted by Rob Tait at Car Tint in Ringwood. Rob expressed a few concerns about the secondary rubber seals below the felted seals and the risk of scratching the tint. I was not too sure how real this problem might be until he sent me a photo (attached) - pretty awful result! The tint wasn't done by Rob BTW.

I know a number of you have had your vehicles tinted aftermarket and I am wondering whether any of you have had the same problem?

Cheers,
Matt

Welcome!

I have had two F30's tinted and neither of them have any issues whatsoever with the tinting.

That picture is not even of an F30?

No problem here with aftermarket tint. Tint A Car North Melbourne is where I had mine done.

The pic he sent is an E90 (check mirrors). F30 is different and has no scratching issue.

And, BTW, that's the worst scratch pic I've seen. What tint does he use? My E90 after 3 years with 3M tint had only 20% of the scratching I see in this pic.

Hi
I also inquired about tinting thru Car Tint having had previous cars tinted by Rob.
Told me not to do it and supplied same photos as reason not to.
Given the good feedback from you guys re aftermarket tinting, I'm getting the dealer to arrange tinting for $190. (front windows only). I figure I'll get warranty support if it develops scratches. In any case, replacing every 2-3 years wouldn't be the end of the world.
Cheers
Steve

I thought the mirror profile looked different to the F30 mirrors. Not an expert on previous generations of the 3 series yet….

Not sure what film was used as the tint was not done by Rob. My previous cars have all been done with Madico films and never had any problems with them.

Thanks David. As a fellow Melbournite, can you tell me where you had your tinting done? Since Rob has done every car I have owned since 1998, I haven't needed to look elsewhere….

Guys, there is no issue with window tinting on our cars.

Just go to a reputable local tint shop and get it done. I got mine done at tint-a-car and I think it was only around $200.

These are 3 series BMW's not Ferrari's or Aston's for goodness sake.

Personally I wouldn't just tint the front windows either I think that looks ordinary, but each to his own.

I would also suggest the dealer just engages a local company anyway and adds their exorbitant margin to it and BTW your warranty will be with whomever tints the car not BMW.

No reason to cut anything on F30.

Madico should be OK, but which film are you considering? Last time I checked the only Madico films that were non metallic were Charcool (a sort of dyed film with fairly poor solar heat rejection) and Wincos which tends to be blue-ish, a bit reflective (ceramic).

Madico also now owns Sungard so maybe their products are changing?

I had mine done at the dealer. Mine is now developing these scratches on the passenger side. Glad I had it done at dealer because of warranty

My aftermarket tint is fine but I believe I got a lifetime warranty anyway so not concerned.
