Considering a 320d wagon (F31)

Hello,

So I came across a 2014 F31 M-Sport pkg automatic with 77K miles from a private seller. This is the diesel (320D) version with XDrive. It's in overall good condition. We haven't gotten to negotiating a price yet.

I've owned a couple 128i coupes, an 2015 M4 and currently an M2 Competition. Im not too familiar with the F30 though. We are considering replacing a 2013 Toyota Highlander with my wife being the primary driver.

The wife has come to love the dependability of her Toyota. In reading through some posts it seems that an area of concern is the XDrive transfer case. How concerned should I be? Are there any other areas that would be considered problematic or that i should be weary of? What would be considered a reasonable price for this wagon?

Thank you in advance.

I have an X-Drive with about 60k miles. It’s never needed any repairs. I haven’t heard about X-Drive transfer case issues. Are you finding issues with vehicles that have been tuned and driven hard?

This is a very common issue on early mode years. My 2015 328d had the transfer case failure which is the output shaft shearing off the teeth after excessive vibration. BMW fix includes a rubber guibo after replacing the failed transfer case
My 2019 however has not had any transfer case issues

To the OP; the transfer case can be cause for concern as well as the HPFP. I had mine fail on my 2015 as well and was not covered by BMW as it was out of warranty. As you know with your current and past BMW‘s, maintenance is critical. It will not be as low maintenance as a Toyota, but it’s not a ticking time bomb if cared for

Thanks for the input.

The car is currently at the shop that did my track inspection on my M2. The shop is doing the pre-listing work for a Bring-a-Trailer ad. I will see if I can speak directly with the owner to more history on the maintenance.

Okay, so I have verified that the transfer case and NOx sensors were replaced on 11/21 or 3k miles ago @ 74k miles. EGR coolerand intake were done on 5/20 @ 69k miles.
