iOS12 and iDrive on 2016 F48

Feature removal:

Looks like SMS text messages are no longer available on the iDrive display as the 'show notifications' option is absent from the car's Bluetooth settings on the phone.

In iDrive's messages it will only show 'Service Messages'.

Mine is MY16 too but I haven't updated from iOS9.3 because I thought some incompatibility would appear sometime with my version of iDrive.

If it's not broken, .....

Probably worth updating iOS just for the security fixes. That's almost 3 years of security holes... dangerous on a device that has so much info on it...

I’ve just had a look at my iPhone 7 running iOS 12. Go into ‘Settings’ then ‘Notifications’ and scroll down to ‘Connected’ there’s the option there to turn on ‘Allow Notifications’.
Apologies if you’ve already tried but, if not, it may be worth a look.
I also had to go into the Bluetooth menu on the phone, where it shows the final set of my numeric VIN info, and turn on ‘Sync Contacts’. I had wondered why my contacts were no longer coming up if I tried to call someone who wasn’t specifically saved in the iDrive contacts list.

...er...cough...it is broken...Apple have released numerous security updates since then...not to mention stronger security in the later iOS versions....so you really do need to update for the fixes they've released 😮

So does iOS 12 work fine with our early 2016 version iDrive? My dealer hasn't updated it since delivery in July 2016. See version info.

FWIW the particular phone I use (for a variety of other reasons )doesn't have much data on it, not used for email, wifi always off and BT on only while in the car. This was the trade-off for ensuring it kept working with the iDrive.

I'm not near my car at the moment but I think you have the same version as me, which works fine with iOS 12

If you can confirm your version is the same, let me know and I'll consider an iOS update.

And boy, if it doesn't work ...

Actually I didn't upgrade to v10 due reading complaints that various features and functions on the phone itself no longer worked.

OP: let us know if the suggestions from oakey46 work for you.

Ok, mine is slightly later by version numbers but I can assure you it works fine with the 3 iPhones we have, viz, 6s, 7+ and iPhone X — all running iOS 12

Hang on! Get your dealer to pull their finger out...go to the sales manager and suggest you're keen on...oh, say....an X5...but you're just unsure about service support...for example, you've not had your iDrive updated since purchase....and watch what happens!

Sadly my dealer is a country one who also sells another brand, and as a result WRT to service seem to be "a jack of all trades, master of none".

When I asked for a map update to be done the service guy admitted he didn't know how that was done, and later said their spare parts guy said it would cost $170 and take 4 hours to upload. My pointing out my car had 3 years of free updates got an admission of him not knowing about that. I ended up downloading the map update myself when I got access to high speed broadband.

I'd like to find a dealer in Melbourne who have a good service section, if someone can recommend one.

Interestingly this site with X1 F48 says Office email and SMS is not available with iOS 11.2 (at least with my iPhone 6s - didn't try any other models):

https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/compatibility-check.html

Maybe Apple did something about that with iOS 12?

iOS 12 was effectively rewritten from the ground up, so wouldn't be surprised if some things didn't work.

I think there was a changes a couple of iOS versions ago. I have my mobile set up not to deliver SMS or other messages when connected to the car's BT. Probably a good setting for safety.

SMS messaging is one thing I find particularly handy. I don't read them on screen, instead have them read out, and dictate a short response.

True office email and SMS is not available with iOS, however Notifications of SMS / iMessages IS available in iOS 11 which is different.

You can't natively response to an SMS via the CAR, but you can long hold on the voice button to get Siri and use Siri eyes free to respond to text messages.

---

Pair the car and phone
Go into the office menu and make sure that it's set to show the phone notifications (don't have car handy to pull exact information)
Then on the phone go into BT, and to the cars connection and make sure that show notifications is enabled.

This will push SMS notifications to the car which you can read in messages, but you can't respond in the car (hence BMW saying it's not supported).

This works just fine in iOS10 and iOS11, I have NOT upgraded to iOS12 yet to validate. I will do that update next week.

Hi there. As per my earlier post on this thread, it works fine using an iPhone running iOS 12.

This is exactly how I was using SMS with the iDrive, also Siri can reply to group texts.

I'll be interested to know if you get the Notifications option in the paired car options on the phone.
