Brake pad alternatives
Called my local BMW dealer and they say $180 for front pads. Also that I should replace the sensor that is $50, which is mind boggling since the car has 17,000 miles. Nevertheless I checked my front pads and they do need replacing. I'm most likely not going to replace the sensor, so just looking for alternatives and where to find them. Thanks in advance, cheers. (search was not my friend this time)

I've just replace mine at 28 000 miles, the front pads were worn 90%. I used Textar Pads (the same as OEM installed in the car) and an original BMW brake sensor. You will need to replace the sensor or you will not be able to reset the brake warning! The thing a don't understand is why the pads get worn so quickly. On my E92 335i I replaced them at 65 000 miles and on my E84 at 40 000 miles...are the pads less durable or poor quality?

Err. Yes. They're a consumable (wear) item and I imagine BMW, like other manufacturers including Audi (I've just seen something similar being raised on the UK Audi Q3 forum), want to maximise income from replacing pads/disks by designing them with a shorter service life. They are also not included in the UK BMW service plan add-on although, from what my son tells me, they were included up to a couple of years ago because he had his changed on a 2 Series Active Tourer whilst his service plan was running.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a range of pads available for the F46 — TRW, Ferodo, Hawk, Brembo...
From a UK online site...I'll see if I can find it again.

My front pads had to be changed at 45000 kms - definately shorter life than I am used to. Rear pads still look like they still have at least half their life. Next change I will probably do pads and disks all around as there was a bit of a lip created when I changed them last.

Has anyone heard a loud humming noise while braking? I hear it and feel it in the steering wheel while braking and coming to a complete stop at both high and low speeds. It started about 2 months ago and BMW says there isn't anything wrong with the brakes -_- It doesn't always happen but it happens enough for me to be concerned. The car only has 14,000 miles on it and I'm the only owner.

Brake Pads
Just got warning about brake pads at 32k miles. We live in countryside so not much stop start and drive steadily. With previous cars have obtained 60k plus. This is totally unacceptable and at BMW prices feel being ripped off!

Unfortunately, with all the electronic safety gubbins (DSC, e-diff, AEB, ATC), brake pads wear much faster on modern cars (esp AWDs) than in days gone. Remember, the X1 even "prepares" the brakes in wet weather with micro applications. All these things take their toll

Yeah this is absolute crap. I got my rotors and pads done at 45,000 kms. And the replacements squeal too.
Then I read a bulletin on the service advisors desk saying BMW Canada considers brake squeal "normal". So the squeal isn't exclusive to my aftermarket oem parts. I looked at EBC, stoptech, or hawk at the time but couldn't find anything compatible with the F48. Actually purchased an EBC kit but the retailer confirmed that it wasn't compatible with the F48. |

As the hand brake is electric on the X1 how easy is to replace the pads does anyone know do you require special tools to replace them?
Normally a smear of copper grease on the rear of disc pads prevent any squealing.

I've just hit 30k miles and need front pads, BMW want £360 to fit, pads cost £90, crazy prices.
Eurocarparts has 70% off this weekend, so got a pair of PAGID pads for £29, winner. I haven't experienced any of the issues people have above. |

The finance person claimed that since it was a lease we HAD to have the service done at BMW and front brakes cost $895, and windshield wipers at $160. |

At £360 that should include discs, try asking the dealer again.
