Went to Dealer Today - Declined New Software
In all the posts re the new software, I've heard many ask whether the dealers will update the software or not during regular service. The answer is yes. Also, you will know, because the dealer lists it in the work to be done.
Funny thing is, I asked him two seconds before that if he heard of the software update and if they were doing it, and he says "no". Then I see him type update software and ask him about it. He says BMW is requiring it for emissions reasons and I won't be able to update my registration if I don't get it done. I told him I didn't want it done and that I'd come back if I had registration issues. So he removed it and wrote customer declined software update in the record instead (so, I guess now I won't know if they did it anyway). I'm sure that's a flag for them, but I don't care. I had told the SA before asking about the software that the sales guy inside suggested I chip my car until M3 prices comes down (which was true) but that I had heard the new software would cause problems if I decided to do this, so my reasoning was that I wanted to confirm I could still get the Dinan flash before I let them update it. Also, on a separate note, there's so much misinformation from service guys it's amazing. I had just talked to another dealer a week ago and they told me my brake squeal didn't have a fix and that BMW allows them to tape over the sensors. The guy today told me that they would replace the sensors and that BMW had provided a fix for the sensors a few months ago. btw, my car was in today because pads need to be replaced). |

Speculation or not, this is happening all over the place:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...38&postcount=1 His car was a mid-march '08 build. I presume they are upgrading his Progman to the 29.2.

Yes, but the computer will still tell you a service is required. They do more than just change the oil. At least they did with mine.

I had my DME updated to 29.2 because of a problem with how many miles until its time to change your oil.
The update totally SUCKS !!!! Slower performance and the car has a deeper exhaust tone that is some what drownish between 1,700 2,700 RPM. It is totally driving me crazy. I have reported it to the dealer and they are speaking with a field rep. Anyone else have this update experencing the same? |

I have also made sure to decline a software update on my car when I was at the dealership 2 days ago, but I should note that this was at the suggestion of the SA I spoke with who was trying to help me out b/c he knew I had a piggy. I told him I was aware of the Service Bulletins and he was very cool about it. The message he seemed to put across was that if you don't push the limits and/or have shoddy workmanship done while installing mods they will do anything in their power to have repairs done under warranty. Don't PM me for this dealer's name b/c that guy ^^ will just post it. They did not seem fond of the Procede as they had a car come in that had some MASSIVE boost spikes, luckily I don't have Procede. The fault code when you install a piggy with the new software is stored on the key fob and takes about 10 seconds for your dealership to pull up. |

Bottomline is that it all depends on your relationship with your SA. Mine autocrosses BMWs and is cool with the fact that I have all the mods I do, but I might just be lucky. EDIT: Btw, my car is in for an oil change, brake service, and a couple other minor things. And it was some sensor the reads fuel pump pressure or something along those lines that he said would require the software upgrade.....not just the pump.

Have any of you thought of bringing your cars to independent BMW shops (good ones obviously) and maybe just paying a little bit of money on a 15k service that you may normally not pay for, to avoid this issue...Im pretty sure a shop like that wouldnt update your software if u asked them not to...

Yes, if you have ever had service done before they take your keyfob and put it into this machine connected to their computers. In seconds it pulls up your entire car history and information.
Now, with the new 81 DME, apparently the DME stores a fault code indicating tuning. This fault code, apparently is not seen by the service guys. Rather, and once again apparently, it is stored on the key fob only to be transmitted via that system to BMW directly. BMW sees it, they void your warranty. The solution, it seems is to not trigger this code in the first place. This is no different really than what we have now, except everyone knows how not to trigger a code. This advance in the MSD81 DME has made it extremely difficult to know a) whether or not you have actually triggered this code, and b) how to get around it. This is why people are still cautious of vendors claiming their tune "works" because given the level of secrecy of this alleged code, these tuners may think it "works" when in fact all their customers cars are being tagged as warranty voided. Of course, we really have no idea. But the prospect of losing a warranty on a 50k car has a lot of people adopting a wait-and-see approach.
