I have a tuned F56 Cooper S and that car is seriously more fun than my 360 Spider and far more fun than my BMW. Quote:
Not everyone wants their cars to be the size of small yachts. I love small cars and find the A3 bordering being too big. I love the A1. I'd be curious about this as well. FWD isn't really that big of a deal - and will probably gain more buyers than missing RWD would lose. Having no manual transmission really eliminates the ability to call this car a true 'drivers car' and just makes it one more random sedan.

The "upcoming Model Info" thread has all but confirmed that the car will be auto-only in the US. I think the F40 1-series might get a manual on 116i trim or some other lower trim, but the AWD and 35i trims will be offered just with 8-spd autos.

A big part of it comes down to working on cars with transverse engines/fwd, have to remove too much stuff to do maintenance to the front suspension/drivetrain and practically pull apart the whole front of the cars to change a clutch(remove tranny). Also just the actual handling of decent hp fwd cars, any that I have driven just can't match a proper RWD car.

With respect to repairing - I don't typically do any major repairs myself on my cars, but for minor things like fluid changes, belts and hoses, and plugs, coils, and things like that, I've found that the BMW was as complicated and sometimes more so than any FWD car I've owned. Don't get me wrong - I love RWD cars and still think the 360, my past Miata, and old Alfa spider were probably the most fun cars I've ever owned. That said, don't discount FWD 'just because'. It has it's place too and can be a blast on the right platform. Heck - I'd reckon to say that a Fiesta ST is more fun on the streets and maybe even on a track than a modern 3 series BMW.

New spy shots, with the front and rear design becoming more clear. Looks a little less fussy up front than the 1 series in which its based on. Front and rear look inspired by the 8 series (grill shape, taillights, rear spoiler) and the side profile has a similar design/kink of that of the 6GT and G21 3 Wagon. Overall looks good, just wish it was on a RWD platform with an available manual and inline 6.

My manual R56 Cooper Non-S with its lowly 116HP is way more fun as a daily than my E90 and F36. Sure the BMW's are better overall cars and they are just that, competent cars to get around - I don't look at them if I want to have fun. As for the 2er Gran Coupe, we won't know until we can drive it but I am going to give BMW the benefit of the doubt because they have MINI and have proven that FWD can be fun. |

This is nothing but a giant cherry on top of the cake of symbolism depicting how far BMW has fallen.
Glad I rushed to purchase an M2C before they managed to ruin that too.

I don’t understand BMW’s direction?
They were the ultimate driving machine, now the new 1 series and 2 series are basically Audi’s? I rented a 1series in Europe RWD/6MT/cloth-seats and it was a riot of a car, so much fun to drive. I see the 2 series GC with RWD and a stick as the BMW I grew up with, would that not sell? The 2 series as a wagon with RWD/Xdrive and a stick would be a great car IMO. Would a sporty wagon not sell? Maybe people are buying SUV’s because there is no decent alternatives. I love hot hatches, but they are limited by space 2 series would be an ideal size in this segment. Would an M2GC in sedan or wagon not be a great selling car? Seems like the perfect spec to me? If I could make my perfect BMW it would probably be a M2GC wagon in 6MT/Xdrive for winter use and RWD for warmer climates, am I the only one? |

It will not be long before BMW has to start dropping Models, as they have to redirect huge funds to Electric mobility, autonomous driving, and connectivity.
