"Performance Control" and the E84 X1 Differential

I understand that BMW "performance control" is part of the M-sport package, and in some places was an option with any other trim package. I also get what it does; helping to reduce understeer and increase agility around turns with torque vectoring and selective braking.

I do not understand what components must be added to the E84 X1 to have performance control. For example, is it purely software?

Here's where it gets interesting: if you study BMW's "dynamic performance control system" :

http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/mo...tech-explained

you will notice that the platform actually calls for a special differential which incorporates a planetary gear set and multiplate clutches to distribute torque.

The E84 X1 does not have this differential. There is only one type of differential for all X1 xDrives, no matter what trim option, and it is not what is described above. (this was confirmed by a local dealer BMW tech who was examining official build documents for the E84).

What I suspect is that the "performance control" option on E84's is a simplified version of what is in the M X6's and X5's. In other words, it may only be a software modification that allows for dynamic braking, but not torque vectoring side-to-side.

Any one have an explanation? Please do not send me to other threads on bimmerpost because I have read them all. Looking for fresh, new input here.

Thanks!

Yup, open diffs front and rear on the X1. Certainly no real "torque vectoring" going in.

The performance control is programming, probably involving a more rear-biased torque split and some yaw-inducing brake-based traction control in order to "reduce" understeer. In any event, the "performance control" stinks when driving at the limit. Artificial and can upset the car in odd ways. Turn it off if you head to the track.
