Yeah but think of how much more fun you had with modified cars! I always view it as a hobby and lifestyle choice, albeit an expensive one. Nowhere close to you guys in terms of ownership, but

I've been given a 28i loaner from BMW a couple of times, and it's like day and night to me. The 28i has some serious lag, and the 8 speed gearbox makes it less than ideal for manual shifting. Not to mention the overly soft suspension, making you wonder if you drive a Buick.

The new short-nosed front-wheel-based X1, I wouldn't even consider. My next one will be an M3.

It seems like you are on a fishing expedition. The 35i and 28i with the same options had exactly the same firmness when I drove them back to back.
Apparently both drove like a Buick then ;-)

I can understand that, I drove at least 5 used 28i's of various mileage, the suspension really breaks down around 60-70k. Something about the combination of weak brakes and poor struts makes you feel like your driving a boat.

In your opinion, at what mileage does the 35i becomes a boat?

No idea, only drove one that had 12k on it. 35i are a hard find in my area

You're good. You don't have to own them all at the same time. That's a fairly high vehicle turnover in 18 years.

No one NEEDS a 300hp small SUV..

It's just a matter of whether or not you want it, and if so, good luck finding it!

There are many many people who got the 28i instead of 35i, which is why you are struggling so much to find a 35i on the used market

Personally, I was in the "35i or bust" camp because with a 28i, I would get an F31 wagon instead to get the more modern interior tech, adaptive suspension, etc.

What I really wish for is a 30d or 35d X1. That would have been AMAZING

Totally off topic further but I can say my dinan sport tuner made the 28i very fun. Best $300 ever. I don't know if I'm 35i fast but pretty close.

I find the 8 speed great for manual shifting. There are a few things that I find very useful while in manual mode.
You can double tap to skip a gear shifting down. This is an instant 2 gears down.
Double tap for shifting up will do two separate quick shifts.

While in manual mode there is absolutely no lag, that is why I use it a lot.

They shouldn't. The suspension (in the Sport models at least) is a tuned suspension, which is factory adjusted slightly harder on the 35i due to the 160 lb higher weight and beefier brakes.

The M-Sport suspension is even harder, and what I prefer for tossing the little car around on country roads. The 28is I tried felt like grocery getters, slow off the line, and yes, a softer suspension to the point that the wheel hit the wheel well when driving over ruts. I can see it being more comfortable and economical, but not nearly as fun to drive.

And to the other poster here, yes, a 35d would have been nice. Even greater torque, and little problems passing or accelerating up a hill even with a full car. But, the American market doesn't want diesels, so...
Is a future rwd-biased hybrid crossover, like an X1 version of the i8 too much to hope for? Where the electric is used for power and not mileage?

Sort of related I am not sure what I would replace my e84 with now in the BMW line. Those of us who know love it's car like agility with a bit more height. At 6'4" the height and big windshield make for great visibility. Acceleration wise it's quick in either 28i or 35i form. With the Dinan sport tuner I am really aggravating my buddy in his E36 M3. I've sat in new X1 and it just not the same, 4 series is cramped, a five series too expensive. See, a real dilemma. Nothing offered now offers such a great compromise of so many attributes.
