Thermostat failure

Has anyone had their thermostat fail and the dash light "Service Engine Soon" come on and stay on?

Other X1 Forums have also mentioned the failure at different car mileage. Dealers are not that concern due to a big back-order of thermostats, if available they (Dealers) will change them under warranty if expired car warranty $400+ for the part and installation. Also I was told by the BMW tech when the thermostat fail...it will stay open.

I just change mine about a week ago and NO "SES" light on.

Same here, but I couldn't wait because (wife didn't want to drive the car) I started looking for a replacement it seems all the auto parts shops were also back-order the thermostat as the dealers, found one in the internet, and immediately install it after arriving.

My thermostat was replaced two weeks ago. I also had the Service Engine Soon light on. The X1 was at 28,000 miles at the service. Dealer had stock and replaced within two days.

Yes the thermostat fail state is open. It'll not cause overheating but during cold conditions the engine will warm up 5 minutes slower.

If you are under warranty and if the part is still on back order say that you need state inspection soon so the dealer expedite repair.

If you're out of warranty contact BMW to look for recall.

I believe I'm running into a failing thermostat, too. Seems like I need to get my car in soon, as I only have 1600 miles left on the factory warranty. I've been monitoring my coolant temps through my OBD2 reader, and during some of the cold weather (below 0F) we've had lately, after 30 min driving at about 60mph, the coolant temp never rose above about 80F. On warmer days, like today it was about 40F, the temp still never got above about 160F. Definitely on the cold side.
I got the CEL as well, but after clearing it a couple times, it doesn't illuminate on the dash, but it does come up when I scan the ECU.

2013 X1 sDrive28i with 44,000 miles when thermostat failed

Just got the service engine soon yesterday. Checked it with the code reader and it said something about thermostat circuit stuck open.

Took it to Creiver BMW in Santa Ana, CA. They quoted $179 for a diagnostic, but it was only a $50 deductible as i'm still under warranty. They must have had the part in stock because i got it back today with a new thermostat w/housing and new coolant.

I noticed some of the aftermarket thermostats w/housing are down to $70 but BMW quoted me $181 for just the part.

I also noticed some of the aftermarket thermostat housing look like a two piece with three bolts holding it shut. Unlike the sealed factory unit. so you theoretically could just replace just the actual thermostat going forward. but... Autozone has a sealed, lifetime warranty one, for $118.

BMW part number 11.53.8.635.689 - thermostat
BMW part number 82.14.2.209.769 - antifreeze/coolant
Fault #3490

Had my thermostat replaced back in September. It threw a code indicating that something was stuck open? This is apparently a common issue with the E84 and also with some E9Xs. I only paid my $50 deductible since I have an extended warranty, but I asked my SA how much the service would usually run and he said about $550 for parts and labor. I feel like if this problem is so prevalent, they should run a recall or at least a discounted replacement rate.

Happened at 20k and covered under warranty. Then at 30k the turbo wastegate also had an issue and also repaired under warranty.
