Fuel Gauge-any buffer?

So for those of you that have - ahem - tested it, how accurate is the fuel gauge? I know it's not good for the fuel pump, etc to run it that low. Searching other forums, it sounds like German instruments don't leave much buffer compared to my Pontiac that I used to occasionally run below empty...

I left 1/8 tank like they said for Euro delivery, and when I got car and filled up it took 16.4 gallons, and car is 16.6 or maybe 16.9.

When fill light goes off, if you get to station soon, It's like 14.4, so I'd say fuel gauge is accurate. Speedo reads 5% over on purpose, but Odometer is spot on.

Needle on fuel guage will be on E mark when it needs 16 gallons, so pretty accurate.

I have run down many bmws to near empty by watching the range to empty gauge, Normally never going below 12 to 16 miles to empty, However I did run out of gas in my 2001 m3 years ago when range to E was 20 miles. I think the newer models are more accurate tho

Following up, CIC said I had 10 miles to go, the needle looked to be right on E or very slightly above. Lost the receipt, but I needed about 15.6 gallons at Costco.
And dang I forgot to bring the fuel injector cleaner to pour in. Next time.

You should have had 1 gallon left, and that's low enough to chance it.

I usually try to fill before the 2 gallon ding to keep fuel pump heat down.
