Want to Remove the Annoying Phone Cradle? Here's how

1) Remove the center console back panel with a panel removal tool (part 16 in diagram link below)

2) Locate the metal pin which everything, including the main console door, hinges on.

3) Using a small screwdriver (as small as pin) and hammer, tap the pin through until you can grab the other end with pliers and pull it out. Avoid pulling it out all the way, just do it enough to take the cradle out.

4) Take that annoying, worthless POS outa there!

5) Tap the pin back in the way it came out. Hit it straight on and make sure not to bend it.

6) Enjoy the new (practical) functionality of your center console!

It's pretty self explanatory.

I would add make sure to move both of the front seats forward and the seat back all the way forward.

Also, no need for the special trim tool. Just grab the console trim while sitting in the back seat and pull back and up at the same time. Pops right off.

FYI, #14 in the diagram is the piece that covers the "hole" that's left after the deinstall.
Just snaps into place.

Thanks for pointing that out! I may just have to get that piece to finish the job.

So I got in there and removed the cradle. My question is the damn wiring. What did folks do? I traced it back to a couple of places - on the left there is a connection but I could not figure out how it disconnected. On the right it also looked to go into a connection but I was not sure if it was a single wire or not.

Edit: I decided to removed the wiring from the cradle and tuck it into the panel. Then once that was done I bought up a second hand adapter for an iPhone 5 and removed the electronics from it. I got the connect version. 84.21-2 351308 though not made for the X1 it works. I mated the electronics from the cradle to the adapter. And stuffed that all in the back which is covered by the console back panel. To stuff it back in I had to move some of the other wiring harness connectors and remove the 12v outlet so to have enough room.

I added a two foot Lightning Extension Cable. Which is connected to the original lightning connector and run through the opening back into the center console. Voila connected iPhone. It works with iPhone 5/6/7 etc. And if Apple changes connectors I can just swap out the cable.

Finally did this to mine. Thanks for the great encouragement.

Just unplug all the cables and tuck the loose ends back.

My 2nd delete mod, first was the front plate bracket. This is a much-needed mod to open up space for storage so thanks for this d.i.y!!!

Very quick update - so I removed the cradle - I pulled it all apart to disconnect the PCB so I just have two cable ends tucked behind the back panel.

@BeEmVe have you replaced the old cradle with a new one that fits an iPhone, or just used the connectors from the IPhone cradle to allow your iPhone to connect? What functionality does this give you from your iPhone? The cradles are pretty expensive in the UK so I just want to see what I would be getting for my money

Thanks

I removed the cradle completely and just use the USB port and phone mount on a vent. What were they thinking with this one...

They thought we'd all be safe and avoid looking at our phones while driving. How naive!

Big thanks to the OP! Removed the phone cradle from my car last night.

In case anyone's curious here's what the inside of the panel looks like. Notice how the tabs along the side point downwards. I grabbed the panel from the bottom corner, pulled up and it snapped out.

Great 10 minute DIY- deleted the annoying phone cradle from The Wife's X1 this morning during an oil change while waiting for the oil to drain.

Couldn't have been any easier to do, and had ordered the cover plate earlier so the whole thing was completed at once.

Sorry never noticed your post. I removed the original cradle built into the console. Then I bought a used BMW iPhone Snap-In Adaptor that has the lighting connector. Like this one but used for a fraction of the OEM price.

https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/6...NING-CONNECTOR

This gives me full functionality of the phone (music, apps, etc).

Thanks, got rid of mine just now. I popped the center cover back panel from the bottom with a flat screwdriver, that went very easily.

I had some problems removing the cardle wires, I ended up removing the electronic board with wires attached from the plastic cardle and just tucked it in behind the center cover back panel near the carpet. I used some tape to cover the electronic in case something should gets spilled on it.

A good one! more convenient and extra space!
