Have a loaner and.........
Dropped of my 2014 28I Xdrive for service (have for 3 weeks) and I have 328I as a loaner. I see some very distinct differences in the performance, any ideas on the following:
GAS PEDAL: -------------- 328I - pedal is buttery soft, no effort to press X1 - pedal is firm and you need to apply significant pressure BRAKING: ------------ 328I - touch the brake with very little effort and the car stops smoothly and quickly X1 - need to apply 2 -3 x's the pressure and seems to take much longer to stops and doesn't feel smooth like the 328I. Could this be that they need more break in time (650 miles now) ? ACCELERATION: ------------------- 328I - again smooth and responsive - SEAMLESS is the best word X1 - responsive but it feels labored in comparison to the 328I ASS (AUTO START STOP): ------------------------------ 328I - when it restarts it is smooth and though you notice it starting it seems quiet and smooth X1 - when it restarts the starter and engine kicks and you feel the car reaction / jerk SIDE VIEW MIRROR AT NIGHT: ----------------------------------- 328I - clear and easy to see what is on the passenger side of the car X1 - it is very dark and is hard to determine what is next to you. The side marker light in the mirror when signaling to move over seems to blind you to what is next to you because the image in the mirror is so dark. Could it be so dark because of the auto dim feature and if so is there a way to turn the auto dim down or off ?completely? RIDE QUALITY / COMFORT: ------------------------------- The loaner 328i rides as if it doesn't have run flats. it feels like a smooth luxury car ride as compared to the X1. There are specific road imperfections in my daily commute that require me to slow down to 5 miles an hour to guide my X1 through them and still you feel a thump and feel the suspension give where as over the same road imperfection you can be going 35 MPH in the 328I and hardly feel the rut. I really liked my X1 till now. Now I feel as if the X1 is inferior in many respects, any info or thoughts that would help love my X1 again would be welcomed and appreciated. I understand that I have an SAV / all wheel drive but I would think that things like gas pedal operation, brake operation smoothness ans such should be comparable in all BMW's Thanks |

The acceleration, pedal feel, and braking are a result of the same powertrain having an additional several hundred pounds to lug around. This is why I got the 6 cylinder X1 - it's extremely fast with great pedal feel and bigger brakes than the 28i.
I can't help you with the ride comfort - though I will say this may be a matter of taste. For example, I've been driving a 328i loaner for a while and I absolutely hate that smooth, bouncy ride. It's not controlled under hard driving and I much prefer the suspension of my X1. |

Most of the newer BMW cars, the F-Series cars, are more like what you describe, softer, lighter inputs and less feedback. You really have to be careful with specific options to get an F30 3er to have that classic BMW feel and most of the loaners are aimed more towards comfort. I personally don't like that feel at all and we chose not to buy an F30 because of those things and the overall large size. Sounds like maybe you should have test drove both?

Couldn't agree with you more. I test drove a 28i that had more options and the same price as my 35i ($40,295 IIRC) but I needed that 300/300 @ crank. I'm coming from a e39 M5 and the n20 wasn't going to cut it. I'm not knocking the n20 but if you want performance in the x1, go for the 35i.

I'm not an X1 owner but do own a similar but lighter E90 sedan. I recently had an F30 328i as a loaner so can relate my experiences. I much prefer the brake feel of the E90 which I'm guessing is similar to the X1. The firm pedal gives more control. The F30 rides a bit better but is not as precise when cornering. I was also very disappointed with the steering of the F30, so much so that I may give up my much loved manual transmission to get the hydraulic steering in the X1 xDrive 28 when my lease ends.

I also had a 328i as a loaner. It was soft and squishy. It was, perhaps, slightly more responsive for 0-1 mph, but otherwise it felt more like something you cruise in than something you toss around.
Compared to it, my 35i M-Sport felt like a Group B rally car, although I can see the 328i being a great car for comfortable city/highway driving without going up to a 5er. |

i have owned an e90 prior to my 35i X1 and i can tell you that the X1 is almost identical in ride and feel. I had several f30 loaners prior to choosing the X1 and i would never chose an f30 328I over the 35I X1, actually i would never chose an f30 over the x1 unless it was an m/// car. You also have to remember that the Xdrive adds a lot of weight to the car that the f30 does not have and that is also why i selected the 35i. If you are looking at the 28I you need to get Sdrive and you will notice a huge difference. if you want the sporty feel with Xdrive you need to get the 35i.

That's a tough comparison. The X1 gets hydraulic steering (except in the sDrive28) because the EPS won't fit in with the AWD system in the old chassis. If it did all X1's would have the EPS and the same crappy steering but better fuel economy. Also, the F30 has a lot more standard equipment than the X1 including iDrive and the 335 has the ZF 8 speed AT while the X1 35 has the older 6 speed. The 335 is also lighter than the X1 35 and all F30's have a nicer interior than the E90 or X1 (IMO).

Comparing X Drive to X Drive, it's 180 pounds, but it's 450 pounds if comparing a rwd 335i to an X1 35i. I don't think many folks would argue about the F30 having a nicer interior, but I sure do prefer the in dash nav to the tacked on look of the F30.

My complaint about the F30 is that it feels like driving a bloated American car! very disconnected and soft all around, if i wanted that i would buy a MB. The base interior on the f30 is marginally better than the X1.

I have to disagree on the nicer interior. I had a F30 loaner and the headliner looked like a burlap sack, I was shocked at how cheap something you have to look at could be so bad. Maybe it was the light beige interior. It looked like a newer design but certain parts looked cheaper to me. As for the ride it felt a little soft compared to my E93 but it was a Luxury model which is softer. I prefer the feel of the X1 and E93 which are more connected if you know what I mean. I'd definitely buy a F30 but the luxury version is too laid back.

Judging by his description, he had a 328i loaner @ approx 3360lbs (BMWUSA) vs a X1 28i Xdrive at 3726lbs (BMWUSA) So yeah I bet a engine pulling 400+ less pounds will feel a bit quicker. OP how about the next time you get a f30 328i loaner, find at least two of your friends that weigh 200lbs each and put them in the 328 and then see how it feel acceleration wise. I'd love to shave 400lbs off my Xdrive

I have had several loaner F30s (always lightly optioned) and my parents have a fully loaded 328i.
I have to disagree on a few points. ASS is even jerker on the 328i (due to weight). Sometimes it is smooth but other times it jolts you much more than the heavier & higher X1. Tires play a huge part in ride quality. Our M Sport with summer P7 tires cruises better than any F30 I've driven (due to ride height). The 3 handles better but EPS is a letdown compared to hydraulic. The Pirelli P7 A/S tires on my parent's car (they have dynamic dampers) seem to ride rougher than the Contis on the newer loaners I've had. What tires are on your X1? I have not driven a F30 M Sport with summers. The mirror difference is likely just a lack of auto dimming on the loaners. I have noticed zero difference between our X1 and the parent's 328i. |

The successful Euro-Ford RS/Cosworth models and Opel Manta/Ascona 400 never even got their counterparts in American Ford and GM, and the VW Golf GTI was "customized" (softened) for the American market, and even then never became a bestseller like in Europe. Americans in general don't like to feel connected to the road, and many are allergic to acceleration too. Not speed - they'll gladly drive 90 mph when it's safe to do 60, but think it's reckless to go 0-50 in less than half a minute. Combine that with the much lower gas prices, and you get a bunch of cars with oversized engines, but little road contact. Nice for cruising long distances, but completely useless for spirited driving. This is reflected in American motorsports, where Nascar is immensely more popular than rally cross. And yes, most of the newer 3er models seem more like the 5ers and 7ers - more for comfort on the autobahn than for country roads. The 1 and true Ms is where the agility is now. |
