Thumbs up Review - Hood insulation from bimmerfox

Just received my hood insulation I had ordered from Bill (AKA bimmerfox) - here's the rundown (jump to end if narratives aren't your thing)

I had contacted Bill back in mid-June to see about a hood insulation kit - no go, as they were out. Last week, I get an email saying they were available and would I like to order one. Order placed on the 10th of July, it was on my doorstep on the 14th, and installed on the 16th.

First - props for Bill reaching out to me once he had stock - many people wouldn't do that.

Second - awesome bit of packaging - you'll have to see it to appreciate it!

Third - product quality is AWESOME. I kept looking for a BMW part # or roundrel logo somewhere - the fit and design is that good.

Fourth - definite reduction of annoying engine noise in cabin. Car is quieter, but still has that sweet howl when the N20 is pushed to 3000+ rpms.

Hood insulation...

I did installed the hood insulation and looks great, I wish those support buttons caps were a bit larger, they seems undersize when installed, but I haven't lost one yet.

We have tested those plastic plugs. Don't worry, they will not come loose.

What do you mean by "isolates heat for the engine compartment by 65 F?

Ive noticed that after I run the X1 a bit and then park it in the garage, the residual heat can make the fender. lights, etc real hot, about 125 F on the left side of the car...

Anything help to reduce this heat?

Has anyone asked the question if BMW engineers deliberately left the hood insulation off the X1?

For example if the X1 engines were generating too much heat that needed to be dissipated then leaving this insulation out may be deliberate as a way to allow the hood to remove some of that heat - especially in hotter climates.

I'm just speculating but if it were me I would want to know the answer to that question before I installed this insulation.

My fears as well though you don't get them shipped to the UK anyhow.

I believe that the Turbo can run very hot and although I hate the diesel clatter when pulling away, it's not noticeable once moving.

Would prefer to have had some insulation though

A friend of mine who is a dedicated BMW mechanic always opens the hoods of his cars when parking them in the garage. I never asked him "why", but I suppose it was to allow the heat from the engine to more rapidly escape.

B5 S4 Audi's liked to combust when driven hard and turned off without enough cooling. Mostly an issue in Germany due to Autobahn speeds. The turbos were very close to the fenders and without airflow over them, things got too hot.

The last thing I'd do to a turbo charged car is start adding insulation. Early N54 335i's had the hood insulation, but later ones lost it. I doubt it was because BMW wanted their cars to be noisier.

Isn't the OP in TX? If you have an N55, watch your oil temps closely. If you have an N20, just be careful in summer temps since BMW left an oil temp gauge off.

Without data it's just speculation that having the heat shield in place adds stress to the engine. The cooling system cools engine while running, and the engine only gets cooler after turning it off. Right? Is there data to the contrary?
I've also heard about opening the hood after turning off the engine. I suppose doing so could make hoses or belts last a percent or two longer since things are cooling down a bit faster, but I've never seen any test data confirming this.

Without data it's a toss up between "the extra insulation caused heat build-up that was detrimental" and "BMW bean counters saw a way to save $10 per car."
10+ years ago I would bet on the former, these days I'd say it's likely the latter.

Purchased & Installed Hood Installation

I bought the hood insulation for my X1 xDrive28i from Bimmerfox. The transactions was smooth and fast, since I am a 2-day ship point, I received mine in 2 days.

The hood insulation came well packaged and in perfect condition with the hood insulation and all fasteners needed along with instructions.

The installation is quick and easy -- no tools or special skills required! We're talking 5 minutes or less.

The X1 is definitely quieter, at idle in the garage I noticed the difference and on the road there is less engine noise.

I have read about concerns that the insulation will cause more heat build up after shut down, but I have seen new 528i and a 335i with hood insulation that were brand new. This leads to me to believe there is no hood insulation on the X1 because of BMW costing concerns to reach a target MSRP.

The 528i and the 328i both have larger engine compartments. I've noticed that after a long haul on the highway at 120 km/h, my engine gets H O T. So much so that opening the hood is a careful exercise in speed and precision to get it unlatched and up without burning too much flesh.

I've yet to say to myself "wow, this car is really loud". I find it's quite the opposite. Then again, I coming from a Ford Ranger and before that, a highly modified T-bird.

Has anyone went as far as to insulate the exhaust, either with wrap, or better yet ceramic coating the exhaust and the turbo. I would think the turbo is water cooled? That would be another great up grade if it isn't. seeing as this engine is as hi-tech as it is I would guess its water cooled.

I wouldn't use exhaust wrap on a street driven car. I wrapped the headers, UP and DP on my previous car and welds on all three pipes failed after 3 to 4 years.

Thanks to MNTim for getting pics up - that's exactly how mine looked.

Concerning heat - definitely a thought - however, I know there is more room underhood than my MKV GTI had (and better airflow from what I can tell) - it came factory with hood insulation. However, factory tune was a bit milder (200 vs 240HP) - I'm definitely keeping an eye on as much as I can, especially in the hot Texas DFW stop and go driving ...

Leaving in the SW with summer temps equal to the

Death Valley...the anticorrosion cosmoline inside the hood cavities were melting and streaking the front lights and the front eng interior. After installing the hood insulation it did stop the leakage, probably the cosmoline was sponged by the hood insulation.
