2014 xi 35i xDrive steering noise

When I make a very slow speed hard left turn, like turning into a parking spot, sometimes I can hear a low groan from the front left. It isn't the sound of the steering whining like you sometimes get when you are maxed out in one direction. It is very intermittent and the sound doesn't happen through the entire turn. Also, I can't seem to make the same noise happen in reverse. There is no noticeable difference in steering feel and I can't "feel" the groan through the steering wheel.
When the engine is off if I rock the steering wheel back and forth I can hear a clunk sound in each direction but I have no idea if that has always been there.
Car has 40,000 miles. Thoughts?
