Front Dif Noise

Hi everyone,

2013 X1 x28i

I have a metal on metal scraping noise when I let off the gas. It goes away on hard acceleration. I took off the stiffening plate and wiggled the drive shaft where it joins the front differential and there is some play, but I’m not sure if that is where the sound is coming from. Anyone have any experience with this or thoughts about what it might be? If it is the pinion bearing in the dif, is that a major repair?

This could be a whole host of things. I'd say not to waste your time, pay a visit to your favorite mechanic.
