Other cars considered?
Just wanted to see what others are/were on the radars of X1 shoppers/owners.
Me: -Crosstrek (wish it had a little more motor- the friggin diesel) but I can't help but like it and for 10k savings I think I can accept its shortcomings as it will serve as commuter/all weather beater along side the 128. -Any near term diesel CUV (confirmed GLK is a long shot but hells yeah I'm driving it) Looking forward to Mazda coming through on the CX-5d. You?

I like the Q5 looks, but didn't like the way the Q5 drove.
For me it was GTI, A3 TDI, or Golf TDI. Tight connected-to-road driving was paramount for me, and won ahead of any size concerns. |

Q5 (new 3.0 or upcoming diesel)
VW Tiguan Kia Sportage SX (Turbo) Both the VW and Kia are slower but I like the styling of the Tiguan and the Kia's warranty is really good. Plus they are all forced induction, which is a must for me. |

Countryman S since we're trading a Clubman S. Countryman S was too slow and not big enough and X3 was bigger than we needed. Would have waited for the new wagon but it would be about $50k with what we wanted for options. This is our 14th BMW (15 if you count the Mini). Didn't really consider another brand but I actually like the A3 but it's overpriced.

Like the Q- updated engines will make me like it more at least until the sticker shock. Yeah I'd go with the 35i over the Q5 3.0T. Forgot they detuned it in the Q5 application. I do like Audi's tire/wheel sizing better than the puny 225/45-18s on the X1. Awfully skinny sidewalls for an SAV don't you think?

Yup. That 3.0T is going to be awesome but around here it's selling (orders) for MSRP which puts it into $50k territory. |

Skoda Octavia RS estate, Skoda Superb estate (Skoda is a budget brand here in Europe, same platform as the Golf VI), Audi Q3, A4 Avant and A5 Sportback (boooooring cars), Mazda 6 sportbreak and CX-5 (but wasn't released back then), Volkswagen Passat (also boring as possible), Alfa 159 (too unpractical), 3 series touring (but the new one was coming, so didn't considered it) and the Impreza XV, but too uneconomical and automatic sucked

Considered an A4 for a second.
F30 until I drove one, that steering sucks. WRX STI until I drove on, turbo lag city and if your not in the right gear you better get out of the way. Boxster, I would have, but it only has 2 seats 550i - I couldn't justify spending the Same money on a used vehicle. I'm sure there's a few others but I'd be here all day

Tiguan, No DSG and a bad slushbox, better interior quality than X1
VW Jetta Wagon TDI DSG, no leather? Golf/4 GTI DSG Mazda CX-5, little low on hp. X1 sDrive- low on value and capacity, but best drive! |

I'm coming from a Q5
Audi all-road - felt small inside - not that impressed for 50k+ Range Rover Evoque - Nice ride - ground clearance big plus - sick 4wheel drive - couldn't get past the reputation Crosstrek - underpowered on paper - though i didn't test this one Forrester turbo - so so mpg - too bubbly - a step down Wish the Q3 were available, that might have been a close one. X1 loaded minus the sports steering wheel and paddle shifters on the way:0 Last edited by popopine; 08-29-2012 at 10:00 PM.. |

Q5
X3 2013 Santa Fe Sport (don't laugh until you've seen it) X3 nice inside, responsive (with 35, less well with 28), but perceived driving position was really high, felt like a truck. Tough ride tuning on RFTs. Liked the Q5 and X1 driving characteristics the best, so ended up ordering both. X1 for the wife, Q5 3.0T for me! Wish the Q3 were coming to the US sooner, would have been a nice comparison. Plan to drive the new Hyundai 2.0T for fun. By the numbers and specs, looks like a good package. |

Santa Fe does look good (I think they hired Audi's former design chief) but MT got some pretty disappointing results and actually liked the NA mill better- 9.1 0-60 w/2.0T!!

Test drove an RDX today. Not bad, but I'm gonna pass. Mostly I disliked the transmission which was not very sporty even with paddle shifters. Even when I romped on the gas, it felt like it had to think for a few seconds before power came on. It did not feel like 270+ HP at all but I didn't drive it very aggressively so maybe that's why.

Yeah RDX is a nice overall package but it went from a bit too rough to overly sedate- doesn't asked to be pushed, a nice car for the wife...

Jeep Wangler Rubicon Unlimited and nothing else.
Living in Germany and having limited access to US spec cars, the X1 and Rubi were the only two utilitarian vehicles on the list. To order a Jeep through AAFES, would have been a 4 month wait, and over $2000 in shipping/freight/transportation cost- but still cheaper than my heavily optioned X1. |
