BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Introduces New Night Vision Animal Detection System
39
COMMENTS

From summer 2013, BMW Night Vision will additionally feature a specific animal recognition system that extends beyond the reach of the main-beam headlights. An infrared thermal imaging camera mounted in the BMW kidney grille is able to detect heat-emitting objects from a distance of some 100 metres, while distinguishing between humans and animals by the level of heat.

If BMW Night Vision anticipates a potential collision with an animal, the Dynamic Light Spots start to flash at the animal in a targeted manner. The instrument display simultaneously flags up the symbol of a deer. In the event of acute danger, the on-board system additionally emits an acoustic warning.

I've been waiting for something this since deer are such a problem in PA.

Wonder if it will help lower insurance (better collision avoidance) or raise it (more expensive repair for electronics)?

Any chance those of us with the already release night vision with pedestrian detection will be able to get an update for the animal feature? Or is it new hardware?

Wow, this is starting to make the night vision worth the $2500+ price tag. throw it into a tech package while only adding $1500 and I would be a taker. Of Course since this isn't offered in anything under a 5 series I guess it doesn't matter. Maybe this will make it to the 4 series Gran Coupe and/or X4.

Phenominal. Now add some gun shot sound effect to the outside, you'd 100% good to go.

If it actually works in reducing overall accident frequency and/or severity it may result in a discount assuming the carrier is tracking it as a variable. Some of the collision avoidance systems that automakers have employed have shown positive results and, as such, they may entitle vehicle owners to a discount.

In certain regions where deer and collisions with animals are uncommon this feature would be more likely to generate a surcharge on your premiums, albeit a small one. Other factors are going to bear considerably more weight in determining your total premium.
