Problem


After seeing style 219m wheels on a X1 on this forum I was hooked.

I bought some and wrapped them in COntinental ExtremeContact DWS

245/40/18 front= 808 revs per mile

275/35/18 back = 811

So 3 revs per mile difference...

Heres the problem.. The car stutters when accelerating from a dead stop. Around 10-20 km/h. After those speeds all is normal. Doesn't stutters at highway speeds, smooth as butter.

With those tire size I'm more than in the acceptable range of xDrive. Anyone have an idea what could cause that?

My X1 came with the factory staggered 19's (which I swapped for a square set-up -- 18x9's with 255/40's all around. BIG win, all around). In the course of considering options, I noticed that the diameter of the stock fronts was slightly smaller than the rears. But, your set-up is the opposite -- the diameter of the fronts is slightly larger than the rears. Perhaps this is the cause of your problem, even though the actual differences are minor. My BMW mechanic (with whom I've worked over the past ~15 years) tells me that the X-drive system is VERY sensitive to different sidewalls (even very slight differences).

mine did it a bit too. stock set up.

after i did a diff oil change it went away. so mine was maintenance related.

if you have not changed your diff oil start there

If I go back to my winter setup it stops doing it. If it was maintenance related I guess it would do it whatever the tires that are on, no?

I can't imagine diff fluid had anything to do to fix it, but the guy that drove piss outta it during inspection scrubbed the tires in.

Have you tried running that way with the traction control totally off? Does it still stutter

I tried and it still stutters.

Sometimes it doesnt and sometimes you feel it hard. Not consistent at all

Had a stutter in a couple older e84 x3’s. Not on take of normally. More during slight Accel in higher gears. One turned out being a small part in the center diff. On the other when I replaced cheap worn khumos with some quality name tires it went away.

I have brand new Continental DW. Not what I would call a cheap tire. Maybe the system doesn't like the thread pattern or something..

Did you register the tire in the ECU? Sometimes the IR sensors can't read your tire tread pattern and you have to manually draw the tire in mspaint and send it to bmw to upload it do your car.

BMW Canada themselves told me that so laugh all you want....

Do you have a better theory? I'm way below the 1%, the tire pressure is fine, it doesnt do it when I change back To my square winter setup...

I would stop going to that dealership asap and find an indy shop that can do actual troubleshooting instead of a smoke and mirrors show.

Again, what is YOUR theory? My setup should be more than fine. It doesnt stutters when I switch back To my square setup. Also, BMW Canada isn't a dealership... Canada as in the Country you know?

If you have nothing else to offer but shit talk you can just ignore the thread you know.

I made it because I'm out of ideas on what could be wrong. The indy shop already looked at it and found nothing wrong. the wheels are balanced, the tire all have the right pressure in them..

I created this thread with hopes that someone else had that problem and fixed it and would share his story.

Again, if you doesn't have anything to offer but being smug then I could do without your replies.

I have no idea what is the offset of the factory 19s but the style 219m are

Front et29
Rear et23

EDIT: seems like the factory 19s for the e84 are style 324

Ok, now I can see a few things going on.

I have the same offset on 8x18 30et and 9 x18 41 et on s28i

Front is already 1.1 inch narrower factory, and at 120 mph car would sway riithmically to nearly change lanes..

I think traction on rears was grab and throwing power to opposite wheel.

I put 12 mm spacers on front, and stopped it.

I also put less grabby cerammic pads on rear.

Your new rear offset has moved wheels out 15 mm more compared to fronts.

Put some 12 or 15 mm spacers on fronts and none on rear.

Also, those tires are too wide for 8 X18 and 9 x 18, but will maybe work it you try spacers on front first.

Perfect size is 225/40x18 and 255/35r18 or use 8.5 and 9.5.

I ordered x1 to put on those 225/40 and 255/35 which comes soon with michelin sport 4s
That gears down for approx. 4% more power.

First thank you for your answer.

I was thinking about putting some spacers in the front honestly. Mostly for the looks because I didnt think it could be a solution for my problem.

Second, my wheels are style 219m from the E90 M3 so they are 8.5 front and 9.5 Rear and not 8 and 9

Just for fun, why don't you measure width of both axles outside tire to outside tire down near pavement ?

Honestly ? Because I don't see how that could affect the xdrive system. AFAIK offset doesnt affect xdrive, right? It's all about total circumference, no?
