BMW USB adapter for iPhone vs iPhone's USB cable
Just wondering if BMW's USB adapter for iPhone work any differently than iPhone's own USB cable in iDrive. I ask because USB compatibility check for iPhone 4 (link: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...ROW&country=au) shows that videos are fully compatible through USB connection but videos don't work while using iPhone's own USB cable. I haven't tried with BMW's USB adapter yet. Only audio is played through car's audio. Below is the quote from BMW site: (Note: though the compatibility check site doesn't mention about this at all)
"To integrate an Apple iPod or Apple iPhone, the BMW cable adapter for Apple iPod/iPhone equipment option is required." from http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...usb_audio.html Site doesn't mention about using media snap-in adapter or any optional requirements and I did select Australia for country as we get the stripped down version of X1 and my VIN to get the exact settings I have. Anyway, if someone has some experience in this then I got pro Nav with Internet. Since Australian X1 don't come with built-in SIM I don't have ConnectedDrive services like BMW Apps, BMW Remote etc. Thanks.

From a MINI board, this was a much discussed issue and the result seemed to be it was dependent on the iPhone version. It seems to work in the iPhone 4, but nothing newer such as the 5 or 6.

but did it work with Apple's own USB cable or only with BMW's Apple USB adapter? I tried iPhone 4 with Apple's own USB cable but only audio was playing out. So, was wondering if the video support thing they mentioned was only with BMW's adapter for Apple. They don't mention video support for iPhones other than 3GS & iPhone 4 using USB connection in the site. Blackberry Z10 is also on the supported device.

The folks were using the MINI "Y" cable, but the BMW cable would not work
So, cables and iPhone version are key. Like playing 3 card Monti

I have ordered media snap-in adapter for iPhone 4 to see if video works through it. If it doesn't will try the Y cable. I just want this freaking thing to work

Turns out BMW Y cable for iPhone will not work for video playback unless a USB/AV port is retrofitted into centre armrest as X1 only has USB/AUX port that doesn't support video out. Even media snap-in adapter wouldn't work for videos for those unlucky X1s that don't have 6NR option fitted as BMW installs the video cable with this option. So now I have settled down thinking at least this media snap-in adapter looks better than 6NS base plate cover and hoping to do the retrofit one day..
