Rear Light cluster removal
Can someone please point me to a removal guide for the rear light reflectors (on the body - not boot lid). I have recently purchased an X1 with a hole in the plastic and want to repair / replace.
Many thanks. |

If you're talking about the lights themselves, then there are access ports from the boot and the lights are held in by a couple nuts.
If that's not it then put up a photo of what you're trying to remove. |

Yeah then just look inside the boot, behind the light, you'll find an access port that's closed up by the same material as the rest of the carpeting. That comes off fairly easy with some persuasion.
Then unplug the harness - there are three clips holding: one on the top and two on the bottom. From there you should be able to find the nuts that hold the light in place (I believe there are three but might be mistaken). Just be careful taking those off as the light has a tendency to fall out without those nuts. I'm not sure if you'll be able to repair the plastic as the whole assembly is very tightly glued together. If you don't want to pick up a new light assembly then maybe just use some high quality wrapping vinyl to seal it from the elements. Either way let us know how you get on. Especially if you find a way to fix it! I have a similar problem on the other side, though mine is much smaller... |

The repair was fairly fiddly and I was surprised how much the original pieces needed to be filed in order to get them back in correctly. First, I glued some pieces of a plastic knife inside the hole to provide a framework for the bits to sit on. I then used superglue to fit them to this 'frame'. After it was all set, I used clear epoxy to fill in the gaps. Photos below: |
