2013 X1 transmission failed!

2013 X1 113k miles. I was driving home from work last week at night when I got a transmission temperature too hot warning message. I pulled over and restarted the engine like it said, and then each time I put it in drive, It would go to 1st and then pop back to to neutral. After several tries, I finally got it to shift past 1st and made it home. Stealership pulled up the codes the next day and it had quite a few transmission error codes like, trans ratio monitoring all clutches, turbine rpm, collision of measures, etc. Test plan result was trans replacement. Quoted $9,800, so I just traded in for another X1. Just wanted to let folks know. The 8 speed transmission has questionable reliability to me at this point, because my wife's 2011 X3's 8 speed died at only 30 miles and was replaced by the dealership.

I have asked to replace the transmission fluid and the dealership said that the oil is for life and can only be added to be at the level.

Still wonder though....

I just had the transmission in the wife’s 2013 535i flushed at our dealer, no questions asked. $485.00 dollars and it was recorded on the paperwork as cleaning and full fluid exchange. Transmission definitely shifts better after the service, wife even noticed the difference. 75,000 miles on the car.

Yes, total fluid exchange at 60K miles.

The one thing I don't do anymore is use eco pro mode. I used it all the time and it short shifts the transmission. I can see how this wore out the clutches since all clutches were worn out.

After 2 failed transmissions in 2 cars, what persuaded you to go with a BMW yet again?

You've most likely never driven a BMW on a track. I'm addicted to the brand. Sure it's disappointing, but my 335I and E92 were both tracked for years and they both have 160K miles. I sold the M3, and still have the 335I. The transmissions are good. These two failures are anomalies.

Get a bmw with a 6MT!!! LOL

Even though It is lifetime fluid is better to change it at 100,000 miles or less

We've always had our transmissions flushed and the fluid changed on our '05 X3 (sold at 225K miles) and our current '15 X1 (75K miles) and have never had any transmission issues. To others out there: don't believe BMW's BS about 'lifetime' fluids. It's an epic fail for the longevity of the vehicle.

Would you please elaborate on this? I'd like to hear more about it. TIA.

Fluid changes are a must, however, the transmission assembly has to be exact, with very tight tolerances. And minor deviations will lead to trans failure. Eco pro mode is supposedly for winter driving, not for continueous use as it shifts to get you into higher grades as fast as possible.

Thanks for the info, I'll bear it in mind when I or my wife drives the vehicle. Transmissions/drive trains are better than ever in many ways, but sure seem to be intolerant of anything out of the ordinary.
