Oil capacity and change intervals

FCP Euro sounds like they are losing money on the deal but it's just not worth it for me to go through the trouble of sending used oil back for roughly $25 savings. I use Rotella T6 5w40 for all my cars, $20/gal.

Mann, hengst and mahle are the oil filters you want to use. Others have fitment issues.

I used KN on my MINIs and never had issues. They use the same cartridge filters. However, I'm SHOCKED at this price. How does Walmart make money here? It's almost too good to be true. I hope this is authentic stuff.

Ok, so I’m not yet an X1 owner, and I’m mainly here for research purposes while considering my options, nonetheless...

I’m just wondering why a person wouldn’t just buy two 5qt jugs instead of a 5qt + 1qt? You’d save considerably in the long run since the 1qt price is so far out of line. If you’re going to bother comparing prices then why would you ever pay double per volume?

Just store the leftover and use it first at the next change. Surely there’s no shelf life issue with synthetic motor oil. ;^)

I'll keep that in mind for the next time. However, at $43 for oil with filter, it's still a bargain nonetheless. Besides, I want to put in an even 6qt.

Quick question. Is 40 weight too thick for a car with only 30k miles? I hear it's great for cars with higher mileage so I wonder if I should drop to 30??

I have same engine, and use Mobil 1 0w40.

Some 0w40's are slightly thicker, and Mobil 1 0w40 analyzes at 12 cst at 100 deg C whikle 5w30 is approx 10 cst. I've tested both the factory fill and 0w40.

Many people ran 15w40 in lots of Chevy's and got 500k miles on engine.

I sold lots of engine oil, and could see what worked.

Some used to use straight 40, 40 years ago.

0w40 is a thin oil compared to straight 40, and I think perfect weight.

How many miles on your X1 and has it been generally trouble free?

I've only got 26k miles on s28i, and nothing has ever been wrong with car except that old airbag they changed.

I've got 7500 miles on their last free oil change, and looking through fill cap, I can see oil isn't dirty , yet. Dirty oil should at least be dark brown.

I'll change at 10k miles, since oil is cheap.

It did have that funny fuel cut during start off, but apparently that was the traction control going off on worn out P7 summer runflats.

I put Michelin PS4s and wow, traction is amazing wet or dry.

Don’t know if it’s common BMW dealer practice but when I just had them change the oil, they installed 0w30 twin turbo oil and a can of BG MOA extended life additive . I didn’t think additives were recommended but that seems to be my dealerships go to for oil changes.

I wouldn't add anything to any oil.

Few labs have tested the combination.

I run Mobil 1 0w40 for 10k miles, shorter than some BMW change intervals of 15k miles.

At the suggestion of folks here, I looked down the oil fill hole and noticed the timing chain. The oil appears relatively new with a caramel color to it. In fact, I extracted some on my fingertip and it felt good (still some viscosity), and I could still see through to my finger. It wasn't dark/dirty or "thin/watery" in the least.

However, my only concern is "time" not necessary mileage. For example, this oil was changed at 26,788 miles (see attached image of Davis Report). However, this was done in February (8 months ago), the car has 30,500 miles now. Therefore, it's actually only been 3,712 miles since the last oil change. As mentioned, my only concern is the 8 months lapse but imagine that's OK ... can go 12?

Here's a list of work done with dates, before I purchased the car September 4, 2018.

I decided against changing the oil since I'm taking it for a checkup January 2019

Any comments on the Davis Report relative to what has been done? I really don't want to bring the car in and be told something Is falsely needed. The maintenance department has no idea I have this printout.

Any thoughts?

At 3500 miles the synthetic should be in good shape. Due to the duration since last change, perhaps you can replace the oil filter for piece of mind. It is made out of pretty basic fibers. It's easy and if you can change a light bulb you can do this too.

Noticed thermostat failure at 22k miles. No mention of coolant fill. Best check the level and top up as necessary. Thermostat change usually sacrifices a few litres of coolant. More if it's performed by a klutz like me.

However, one would "assume" if repairs were done at the BMW dealer (which is where all work was done), they covered all bases. Or so I'd hope. 😳

I have read in the manual that it uses 6.1 quarts, but then on here where people use 5.5 to 5.8. How much do you put in yours?

I changed my oil this weekend with mobile 1 5w-30 and all seemed well until I drove it.

I noticed oil spilling from the new oil filter (so i took it off and re-tightened it) and looks okay now. I know those rubber O-rings that go around the filter housing are notorious for leaking because once you tighten it, they seem to bulge out the side leaving perhaps open enough to leak out a smidge while driving and putting the engine under pressure.

There is a specific location for the large O-ring to sit on the filter cap. It can be easily mis-located especially if you or careless tech don't pay attention. I've seen in examples where there were TWO large O-rings on the cap! The original one was in its right place while the new one sat on one of the thread.
