Adding An Engine Coolant Temp Gauge

My x1, 35i only has an oil temp gauge. After replacing the water pump at 56k miles, because I got an overheat warning on the info screen, it got me thinking.

Has anyone added in a coolant temp gauge? Is there a way to get the coolant sensor that triggers the fan or something to display a temperature reading continuously on the screen somehow?

The oil temp gauge seems almost useless, and especially considering the water pumps fail so frequently, I've decided adding in a coolant temp gauge is probably in my best interest.

Oil temperature is more important than coolant temperature especially with a turbocharged engine. Coolant being up to temperature doesn't tell you if oil temperature is high enough to start spirited driving. Besides coolant temperature indication isn't going to give you a heads up that the water pump is going to fail. The pump will one day fail and your coolant temp will rocket high giving you the overheating light and you will stop the car and call a tow truck.

The cheapest solution is to just get a OBD2 adapter and use any of the available apps on your phone to view coolant temp and any other parameter you are interested in.

Yup when I care about it (track days and evaluating new tunes) I hook up my MHD wifi adapter and use the app on a spare phone. Shows dozens of parameters for a total cost of $120 or so.

Which one do you use? I've been considering getting one, as factory AGM cars need a tool to reprogram the battery to the car, and if I can actually use it to display water temp and so forth, all the better!

I use the MHD-branded orange connector, bought it through Berger tuning at this link: https://burgertuning.com/products/mh...-flash-adapter
