2014 X! E 84 35I maintainance, upgrades

2014 X1 35I N55 Mineral White M sport, Ultimate package

Recently purchased this car in May, trade in,needed everything 75k miles just basic dealer maintainance minimal,

Upgrade journey:

New E tools Yea!!

3rd day of new to me car bliss: radiator coolant tank level sensor went bad , no clue, dash light, U Tube, sensor bowed from high heat, replaced new ,oem: OK

Initial observations:

Front Brake rotors chewed up grooved uneven wear, original alloys rims frozen onto rotor face, lots of metallic brake dust in rims to clean off,
Ordered ftp euro Zimmerman cross drilled rotors and Akebono pads & stainless rotor hat retention screws

Caliper front guide rods grooved notched, not floating, uneven wear rotors and pads ,full of oem metallic brake dust everywhere cleaned degreased, powerwashed caliper & hardware brackets with super clean etc, wire brushed machined brake pad ear slide surfaces smooth and clean, replaced caliper guide rods with stainless steel upgraded guide rods ecs bronze bushing kits with new sensors.

Stock N55 Big maintainance items:

1st job many oil leaks, valve cover and gasket ,ECS kit
2nd Tune up job Fresh Bosch Spark plugs, original plugs were clean, worn
3rd Brake overhaul, Zimmerman drilled oe rotors Akebono street pads,FTP with ECS Bronze bushing kits stainless guide rods
4th job belt chirp, pulley kit, bearings howling and fresh belt FTP
5th OEM Continental Water pump and thermostat ,begin replacing all new hoses oil soaked swollen ,aluminum cyl .head fitting also, fresh blue bmw coolant
BMW Water Hose with Gasket - Water Pump to Engine Inlet - 11537584550 FTP & ECS
6th Oil Filter Housing o ring and oil cooler tube O rings and formed gasket deformed ,FTP kit new bolts ,o rings for everything affected, added ECS oil filter housing cap with 6pt socket fitting on top
7th Vanos sensors leaking o rings brittle replaced
8th Oil change and filter
9th valve timing solenoid replaced bad o ring
10th manifold pulled during oil filter housing job fresh intake gasket o rings
11th Walnut Blasting oily carbon from intake tract and decarbonize intake runners and intake valves ,following timing order took all afternoon to clean
12th charge pipe broke during removal new VRSF ordered & installed
13th cleaned oil from intake tract degreased cleaned intercooler with superclean
14th electric cooling fan failed replaced new was running really hot
15th Trans service and flush, new ZF fluid fresh filter OE FTP, magnet had metallic fur on it, really needed fresh lube despite lifetime lube sticker on trans pan, very burnt and contaminated. dropped valve body 4 new mechatronic tube seals hardened rubber would not come out of upper case easily, a battle to remove and new mechatronic square ,tube seal installed.
16th Transfer case service sucked out old burnt lube added new Ravenol TC 1470 spec lube, Fresh oil in all cases!
17th Differentials oil change out new royal purple synthetic differential oil
18th replaced 2 heater hoses
19th replaced cylinder head hose to thermostat with billet ecs cyl. head coolant fitting
20th: ongoing ? turbo hoses oil and coolant o rings leaking refresh ,

21th ongoing needs 4 wheel alignment on front tire wear feathering on front

22nd just passed emissions inspection this week good for a year,

Next job getting and gathering more project service parts for BMW Box. More Research,

had intake manifold off, use magnetic inserts in your 11mm socket for manifold nuts,
I dropped 1 nut in between starter and block, gone forever, into abyess,
as oil filter housing o ring failure, that 1 bolt under manifold runner, exxon valdez front of engine began this project

replaced oring gaskets on manifold hard and dried out ,Ellring OE FTP

replaced 2 vanos sensors and valve timing solonoid also bad o-ring leaking

Walnut blasting intake valves was in real need@75k perfectly clean now went thru timing order, time consuming project ,
slow going many layers of oily carbon looking paste gunk covering intake ports and valves all fresh now,
HF blaster hopper, walnut blaster metal adapter tube, BMW clone vac nozzle for intake port ,e bay , small shop vac, valve blaster nozzle tip adapter for hf gun and a box of fine grade walnut shells and a spray can CRC Turbo intake valve cleaning solvent, lots of compressed air and clean rags , CRC solvent help dissolve the stuff walnut shells would not reach well, valve pockets held liquid solvent so valve seats clean sealing good.

Pulled intercooler degreased cleaned , piping had lots of oil in intake tract, visably apparent why intake tract contaminated with oil from emissions stuff dirty design for emissions compliance, looking for a catch can setup for a clean e chassis mounting bracket setup for E84 N55

Charge pipe broke on removal as it was stuck on intake ,tugged it broke so new vrsf charge pipe installed too

vrsf turbo aluminum intake piping better quality and diameter so it will breathe better, soon

RK or new {MHD? researching android flash tune appl}? RK recommended by local dealer parts guy,Tune for E84 N55 35I 6cyl , wish i knew this when i had intake off send ecu into bench flash it. now i might not have to?

Future upgrades:

Android Auto 10.25" Nav.cic display, Avin says Feb release new android 10 firmware preinstalled in head unit/Andream done
supersprint downpipe maybe $$$ pricey/CTS bought
supersprint muffler still pricey
looking at oval exhaust piping and h pipe crossover too would like dual exhaust outlets in back got to go to muffin shop and talk to header guy

down pipe /soon no dyno sheets on these items from so many vendors? expensive CTS Downpipe here in parts box

charge pipe /done
supersprint exhaust muffler/maybe soon
alignment check for front end too/soon
intercooler upgrade /Done 5" installed minimal trimming fits perfect Ebay
E series N55 oil catch can mount with formed hoses ? also mishimoto? burger?
XHP Tans Flash Stage 2 done perfect
Tires soon

Any local help for this project located in Austin Tx?

Mechanical wisdom always welcome, many details to interpret then apply wisdom

Very thorough list, looks like you covered it all. What DP / exhaust are you looking at?

I'm currently thinking Wagner Catted DP.

Edit: see you said Supersprint. I do like that the DP has the flex piping (I have no idea if it makes a difference, but also why I'm leaning Wagner DP)

I was researching about switching out the secondary cats with Supersprint midpipes and the center exhaust. It looks like those should fit with stock exhaust and DP.

i have a really good setup written reply from supersprint vendor it is very detailed about exhaust downpipe setups can send u pm me e mail.

flex piping section is good for better alignment to turbo flange and vibration reduction than a hard pipe just like and why factory pipe has flex joint.

i had a AFE pipe with cat ,awesome, still said throw codes, why do i want a cat that will restrict anything , asked supersprint if cat they sell will throw a code? probally not epa compliant, but not validated?
has to do with catalytic cel count in cat for computer data input values, but down stream mini cats fabspeed can be installed in o2 sensor bungs , Fabspeed vendor, i need more info from real tuners.

kinda looking at Wagner intercooler also and intake hose tubing upgrades for turbo inlet tract first off as pressures will increase with tune and cheap plastic parts r cheesy cheap and failure prone at higher boosts

fresh turbo band and gaskets for down pipe too u might not want to delete much else it will be very loud, have not worked on right side much yet wear turbo is buried, yet gathering parts hoses and new o rings for service

BMW mech said E84 N55 procedure pop RF wheel off spray blaster on band bolt loosen band nut pop extension and socket with hammer it will come loose after lower brackets

my turbo band clamp is corroded as are those copper nuts on lower downpipe gasket flange also i am waiting for new copper nuts for that assembly 99 cents apiece prep for down pipe project dissasembly eventually

supersprint performance muffler 1500 from ecs spendy

supersprint downpipe handmade to order 900.00 5 week leadtime to build from italy plus shipping and customs 1 grand ECS

This Supersprint Downpipe is dope ! but expensive cat model even more! Top shelf Work hand made,

let me know what u find out im still researching Wagner intercooler fitment upgrades for E84 35I has OEM correct fittings on ends if it matters?

New Android 10 Auto head unit display factory CIC Nav upgrade next in feb.

looking at newest unlocked RK N55 E 84 info into flash ecu tunes, also?

Any reputable IC coming from the E9X platform shouldn't have any issues with outlet fitment even if it isn't exact OEM spec. I believe Wagner is one of the few to advertise an OEM outlet fit for their EVO 1 Performance model, but this would only really benefit you if you're using the OEM charge pipe (doubt anyone upgrades IC without upgrading CP first). I think most IC will require some trimming of the plastic shrouds, but the EVO 1 shouldn't require any plastic trimming. (I recall one member's post selling the EVO 1 peformance and stated no trimming necessary w/ the E84 M Sport front bumper). I'll probably end up going with the EVO 1 Performance for a daily driven street application.

For the Intercooler outlet to turbo charge pipe, I haven't done enough research to know if it's worth upgrading for a less than 400hp setup. The outlet charge pipe isn't as crucial as the inlet charge pipe that is prone to break.

Supersprint catback is pricey. From what I read about other cars with Supersprint is that it may be too quiet (catback section only) and you're not getting any real hp gains on the X1. I'm curious what the X1 would sound like with the OEM M Sport catback and Supersprint straight midpipes.

900$ is also pricey for a catless DP. I do like that the diameter isn't outrageously big which I'd guess is for a stock turbo setup. I don't exactly know if a larger diameter DP for a daily driven stock turbo setup would benefit or be negatively affected at the low end due to low back pressure (disclaimer I don't have much knowledge other than reading across the other N55/N54 forums). Wagner does make a catless DP with the flex piping, but the diameter might be larger than Supersprint's DP.

Tune-wise, I believe MHD is the least invasive OTS tune. Just need the cable or wifi OBD2 dongle and the android app. I'm stock on MHD stage 1 and I'd give it 4/5 stars for now (it's only been 1 week with MHD so still need more time with it) I'd give the app and it's capabilities a 5/5, but I'm not 100% convinced on the tune and also you can read the MHD thread on the e90 site. If adding a DP, my preference would be a custom tune. In the future I would go with RK Tunes. (Note: I'm biased towards RK Tunes and this requires removing & unlocking of the DME)

your info is appreciated

thanks for helping me understand this car a little better thru experience ,have not seen any engine builder dyno sheets to show efficencys yet? with various components costs should have dyno hp flywheel test spec sheets info and component build specs to achieve these numbers on the graph.

I will continue to read and research this as it is just the beginning of upgrade paths and wasting cash is way to easy and

All input is truly welcome
