Hunting my X1 on the road?

Hello everybody!

My new secondhand 2011 E84 is really stiff on the steering wheel and I just don't feel safe. It is very sensitive to bumps and especially long track holes on the road, when it can pull strongly to one side. No way I can let go the steering wheel at any time. It happens also when driving on the road that is lean to one side and while changing lanes from left leaned lane to right leaned and vice versa. Like I have to hunt for it on the road while driving. Is that normal?
Can it be due to 7 years old run flat tires which are now very stiff.
Wheel centering is done at the shop, but did a little help to solve the problem.

Could be the tires. I have had 3 sets of run flats and all have been fine. They ride a little stiff maybe, but barely noticeable to me. Are they the original tires from 2011?

I'm not saying this is the issue, but general recommendations are not to run tires more than 6 years old.

Combine this with them being runflats and it certainly could be the cause.

My 14 X1 s28i M sport had some kind of horrendous sway when new.

Very easy steering, but when I tried to catch guys on the autobahn it would change lanes at 120 mph.

With M sport the car wasn't rolling since it had stiff suspension.

I noticed the front track was 1.1 inch shorter so I put 12mm spacers on front only and stooped that.

Now the tracks are approx the same, and steering is firmer, but precise.

I've got Michelin PS4S on and they ride like a dream.

I will add that mine always felt a little twitchy on the highway with the stock tires. Going from the stock 225/50 to 245/45 really helped both the high speed stability and turn-in.

Thanks all. I will buy new tires next month when it gets a little colder, so I can go with winter ones and I will inform you if it helped. Current tires are factory originals 225/50/17 run flats, but for winter, I am planing to go with a little narrower and a little higher regular tires 215/55/17 (very small difference).

See if they'll let you check for wheel looseness when up for tire change or get them to do it.

I would get an alignment done along with a new set of tires. My X1 is very stable at highway speeds when using the original pirelli Zeros and the present Pilot sport 4S.

FIXED. I changed my old and stiffened runflats three days ago. Totally different car! It is straight and stable on the road. I draw it yesterday 100km with one hand, no more pulling to the side. Ride comfort is way, a mean waaaay better. A lot quieter, it can go over huge bumps with no sharp sounds, it doesn't even feel smaller bumps. Also, I went with 225/55/17(3.5% difference) winter tires, instead of original 225/50/17, so now it is a little bit taller (almost 2 cm) and has a more SUV look and functionality. Goodbye runflats forever! Those things are horrible and as I have experienced not even safe!!!
