N55 spark plug replacement

BMW service adviser telling me spark plugs need to be replaced. Car, out of warranty due to age, has only 38k miles. Is this normal?

No, no error messages nor have I noticed any decline in performance.

So there's an "age" component to replacing spark plugs, according to your SA?

Here's a relevant thread:

Might be time.

Thanks for the link. My SA explained the plug recommendations are linked to oil change data and may be impacted by short trips and lots of idling, which, unfortunately is a fact of life for me.

Never a bad idea to stay on top of wear items, and if you do it yourself it's pretty cheap insurance.

I have a little over 100k on my 28 and have not changed the spark plugs to my knowledge. If it was done, it was done by the dealer without them telling me, which is not likely. The car is still running just fine and dandy.

The plugs on my wife's WRX have been changed once in 95k miles. No difference in performance.

One reason to do it on time is simply to R&R a component that screws into the aluminum head Porsche for example specifies a 4y for their plugs. Iridium plugs can fire fine for 100+K but having something in the car 7+ years it may be a bit unhappy coming out. I have had basic cars such as a Nissan Rogue also specify time over mileage for plug changes.

For the X1 N55, the service manual does specify 60K for plugs and I plan on doing them this spring when ours hits...60K

Just bought an X1 35i MSPT with 57,300KM (35,800mi approx). Just wanted to know some of your thoughts in terms of the maintenance. Im huge BMW guy and have an E91 328 and just got rid of my E60 535 (also have a E34 M5 3.8). So my 535 was very unreliable and the diff went early and the transfer case and everything else on the 4WD System. So I was wondering of a to keep it in better shape. Yes I followed all regular oil changes and did LiquiMoly 5W-40...

So at this mileage now what do you guys suggest. Just had the oil & filter and microfilter done. Im doing the rear brakes today so at the same time should I do the Brake Fluid? I know BMW says the tranny fluid is "lifetime" but we all know that is complete bs... Anything guys?

Should I do some preventative and do the plugs or should I wait a bit? I know BAV says to do it by now...

A independent bmw shop to replace the plugs on my e84 n20 every other oil change I thought that was pretty frequent?? I've only one 2 oil changes and one spark plug change so far .. pretty easy overall but not sure about every other oil change maybe 30k miles or so ??

I just did my spark plugs this past weekend at 58k (did them myself). One of my coil packs did break down under the rubber boot, so I had to replace one of those as well. So far, I've just done oil changes - I'll stick to my 6-7k mile intervals, did one at 51.5k and 58k. There's not a lot of time for me between them (2-3 months) but I can hear a difference in the sound of the engine when I change the oil even then.

After my next oil change, I'll look at servicing the other fluids - I want to keep this car to 200k (at least 150k so it's paid off fully).

BMW's 5w-30. Getting my fluids from FCPEuro so I can use their lifetime replacement to get refunded. Shipping cost back to them was about $21, beats the $80 for an oil change.

Just looked at the reviews. That seems to be what FCPEuro is allowing you to do for essentially a free oil change except the cost of return shipping. I don't know how they can do that. I'd be afraid to order anything of
value for fear that they'd close up shop all of the sudden.

Why would you afraid of ordering anything? Seriously, worst case you pay the same price as anywhere else and you can't return your *used* product for a refund? It isn't just oil changes, they offer it on all products. I don't know how they do it, but obviously there is a way they can whether it is doing analytics on the returned products for sales (ever hear of data mining, like what Google does to all our data and offers free services?) or resale/refurb elsewhere. There's a market for everything, you know.

My daughter has a 2015 N20 engine. She just got quoted $400 for spark plugs. $185 for air filter! 43,000 miles on odometer. Is this necessary? How hard is air filter to change and how is the price for the spark plugs

You can get the OEM air filter or other brands from Amazon for about $40 and it takes less than 5 minutes to change and literally anyone could do it.
