man all of those stories scare me! We just actaully bought that 2012 x1 and the friggen check engine light came on AS WE LEFT THE CITY! we took it to a shop and found out that it was the turbo charger putting too much air into the fuel mixture? a lean problem. but the code is blocked by BMW?

then, the dealership didn't do the brakes properly, so it pulls to the left when you brake at higher speeds and the front left rim has dust or grease on it. my dad told me it wasn't properly installed.

what else. oh ..there seems to be a big gap in the front where the hood meets the grill area? like seems like it shouldn't be that way. and when we pass semis on the highway the hood lifts up with wind a bit.

also the air conditioner makes a sort of whining noise when we drive at lower speeds and the noise is matched by the cars rpms.

anyone wanna give their two cents here? I'm not really a car guy and am not enjoying this whole car buying thing!

After reading members w issues on the timing chain plastic guides, my wife traded in her 2013 x1. Its running fine. As one member said its not if its when, that made us uncomfortable, especially didnt want wife to be stranded w a toddler. Enter 2017 ford edge sel V6. Loaded pretty well not like the bmw but still. Also has a lot more room. Gold exterior w beige leather....

We almost did the same but the cd4 platform drives like shit, the previous gen was so much better. I don't think my wife will ever let go of her lincoln mkx.

Personally I wouldn't trade our X1 for a Ford. Those two vehicles have nothing in common. And I think this timing chain 'problem' is being overblown on forums like this one. The majority of X1's will never have this issue everyone here is so scared of.

Are you sure you didn't buy an accident repaired car?

Well may be the timing chain issue is overblown. Its just not the x1, i visited other models w the n20 engine and similar issues. Just didnt want a ticking time bomb. Im not new to bmw, i drive the 335i and 535i both w n54. But first time w the 4 banger. The ford edge is a lot roomier and no turbos, 280hp V6 which is probably better for my wife.

I'm glad the Ford has worked out for you, but the main reason I like the X series vehicles is the way they drive. You can add a bunch of HP to a regular SUV but it still drives like an SUV, imo. Hard to beat BMW's version of the SUV, handling-wise.

I don't consider our '15 X1 a ticking time bomb, if I did we never would've bought it. We've had the vehicle maintained regularly since we got it with 55K miles on it 2 years ago and so far it's had no issues. Hopefully time proves it out to be a reliable vehicle like our '05 X3 was for us.

Thanks. You don't have to sell me into a bmw lol. I know. The trade was not because we "wanted" to but due to the impending issue, disappointing. We even considered pro actively changing the guides to the "new" or modified ones.
I don't think '15 and up are that much affected. It appears BMW modified something on those plastic guides.
Also, this has not much to do w maintenance.

Well I hope everything works out for you guys. Sucks these days that buying a car is such a crap-shoot. I'm hoping for the best with our X1 but I'd be lying if said I didn't sometimes worry about something catastrophic happening to it. Good luck to all of us though, huh?

That's pretty much my exact sentiment.

Much of my career has revolved around the probability of failure, so I understand the likelihood of this happening to any single person is quite small.

Still, given that people on forums are very much a minority of owners, combined with the fact that a number forum members have had it happen to them... well you do get just a little concerned

Just checked my timing chain guides with a borescop, sure enough, cracks starting on the bottom side of the chain guide. 2014 n20, 51,000 miles. 08/13 build date. Have not experienced any whine as of yet, calling the dealer Monday and sending pictures.

Yes sir, best $25.00 dollars spent on the car. Just a limited view, didn't want to get the camera stuck in there. three to five horizontal cracks within a small area, just imagine whats cracked that I can't see. Always dealer serviced, seven to ten thousand mile oil changes. Inside the engine is spotless.

False alarm, I'm an idiot. I just checked again after running the engine. What appears to be cracks on the back side of the timing chain guide is the timing gear reflecting off the shiny oil coated plastic chain guide.

I would still get it looked at.

Hopefully it was a false alarm.

Good news since our 2013 X1 also has 51,000 miles. What makes you think they would fixit for free since there is no recall only an extended warranty. Just knowing BMW without some overwhelming evidence of impending failure they will tryand stick you with some of the cost.
They didn’t care about airbags that were defective and that kills people. Took me 6 months after I got a letter saying my airbag was “in Stock” at the dealer to actually get one to the dealer for my 2007 335.

2012 BMW X1 28i with 80.000 km. That's little over 10,000km/year. Overly maintained vehicle with oil changes done at 5000 km and super maintained like no other.
Always in the dealership since day 1. Also paid extra warranty (almost $4000) for 6 years or 120.000km since day one. The years expired... so... no warranty.
Can not stand the new cheap X1 so we keep this guy. The quality of materials, fit and finish, sound system, equipment is top notch compared with F48.
I bought a brand new engine from Germany. My boy has now 5000 km on the new engine.
Cost of the engine: $27,000 CAD

I have joined strongly the N20 Class action suit against BMW.

Hi Tracus,

First of all congratulations on the beautiful looking X1. I've had my 2011 xDrive28i for half a year now and am enjoying every mile!

I've been following the chain issue online for some time now, and regularly check my chain for slack and for the "whine" sound. Sometimes I think I hear it, sometimes I don't. Car has about 60k miles. I've become even more concerned recently given my brother's 2009 A3 2.0T died 3 weeks ago because of the same problem (Audi's EA888 engine also has a history of failing timing chains).

There are many videos online of whining N20s but given you've just replaced your engine, would you be able to upload a video to hear the sound of an N20 without the whine? For example revving slowly from idle to 3000rpm? I'd like to understand if a healthy N20 has no whine at all, or is there always a slight whine, only that it becomes louder when there's a timing chain issue?

This is a video of my X1:

Thanks and happy driving,
K.

Hello GVA,

For the moment, I am away from home for another week. If you are willing to wait, I can try to make a video.
What you filmed with ? (Iphone?) Just so I can use a similar recording environment.

However, please keep in mind that mine was wonderful until the moment it died. There was no sign of tiredness, no "in-advance" noise, or anything that will prompt me that something it will happen.
Never got a noise, a whining, or something weird because I will be in the dealership next minute.
I just drove the vehicle normally, then sign on dash board, limp mode and done. That's it.

The water pump does make a noise ahead and let's you know that something is coming.
The chain assembly though, usually doesn't.
There are cases when you can hear a whining noise and you can go right away for an assessment. But -like my case and some others- this is not a rule.
If you think that sometimes "whines", then you shouldn't wait. The engine must have the same sound every time. If you have variations, obviously is not ok.

Honestly, if you love the car and would like to avoid the trouble of extended damage or costly work, go and ask for the upgraded chain assembly and have it replaced. That's what I will do.
The new chain assembly has a white guide/tensioner not an orange one.

For more information about this and the story of my problem, please go here:

The chain guide is only white in the beginning, it will turn orange after soaking in oil for many years. My TC was upgraded as well, it was white for a couple months, now it's more on the yellow side. I think the only upgraded part is the chain and the tensioner. Take a look on RealOEM, the guide is the same model since 03/01/2011.
