There's some feature in Road & Track on 'you must buy.'

It got me thinking and this would be one of many. If I could buy an older car then this would be one of many...

The Mercedes S Class 500 SEC. AMG.
Looks so classy in my opinion. I can imagine myself driving it.

What would be in your dream garage?

Rules:
You can base it on anything such as looks or your grandpa had one...

Update. I just remembered my sensei used to have one. I would be setting up the dojo and watch him arrive. I thought frameless windows were the coolest thing...

Carrera gt would be the dream car.

Realistically though in the next few years I've thought about a .2 or 992 gt3 and a Tesla dual motor

Always loved the way the Z8 looks. I am hoping that the prices don't go too crazy when I get the point I can realistically afford this eye candy.

I would love to own a Z8 and could buy one, but parts are scarce to "unobtainable". Of course I would want the real one and not the later Alpina version. Have two friends that had them and they both have since gotten rid of them because of not being able to properly maintain them. Sad

I don’t understand that. My friend has one with a manual and I’ve driven it many times, very fun car.

One of the selling points was they guaranteed parts availability for 50 years. He just had the whole interior redone on his by our local bmw dealership cause it was showing some age. I never asked outright but his is a daily driver and he’s never complained to me about any maintenance issues. What are the issues?

Redoing the interior probably cost many thousands of dollars. A couple of the items that my friends told me about are listed here with current prices where available.

https://www.getbmwparts.com/v-2002-b...--5-0l-v8-gas/

Tail lamp assembly - $2,702.70
Muffler - $868.84
Clutch disc - discontinued
Presure plate - discontinued
Center Console - $2,630.92
Seat cushion - $1,404.28
Glovebox door - $422.74
Air cleaner assembly - $1,033.50

Ok so seems like your friends had a problem with the parts prices, not the availability? My buddy spent more than I paid for my e92 (bought used 2 years ago) when he refreshed his interior... but he loves and enjoys the car and plans to never sell it so he felt it was worth it. Also he only paid like $115 for the car when he bought it around 2010 so he actually had equity in it lol

No clutch disc or pressure plate is availability. Both of my friends loved their Z8s, but didn't feel they were worth the expense. One now has a Porsche GT3 and the other has an M5.

Well that’s a different story. Your initial post said parts were “scarce to unobtainable” which surprised me because that didn’t seem to be the case from what I witnessed.

There’s a new part number for the clutch: 21217526590

And the fact that my buddy said one reason he bought it was because BMW had “guaranteed parts availability for 50 years post production” was a sharp contrast to what you had posted. So I wanted to verify if that was accurate. It’s even stated in the Wikipedia for the car:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_Z8

This is my last comment, because we are jacking this thread, but I am well aware of the item that you posted from Wikipedia, but that doesn't make it completely true or reality. The "scarce to unobtainable" was a quote from my friends. That was their reality. Cheers.

For some of us it is important to know we are going to waste the next 15-20 years of our lives....

If no Z8 the next up is a Ftype SVR

If not that I got to start settling for Ferrari's.. at least I have my Z4C...

Only in competition red, with red twisted leather. Either set of wheels... if only I jumped back in late '09 during the Great Recession, it would be mine. Now, unobtainium for me.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
