Oil Level Indicator

Has anyone seen the Oil Level Indicator showing overfill or does it stop at max? This whole no dip stick thing is annoying. Yes, I have added the spec-ed amount for N55, but I'm just wondering if the indicator would show an overfill or if it's just designed to show max, min, and low.

My 14 X1 s28i n20 never showed anything , but full. I assume it's fubar.

Nothing like driving a nice car without knowing the oil level......

The gauge works, and shows the oil level in 1/4 increments. If you have overfilled, it will indeed show it (and for good reason). If you don't have an iDrive display, you can check the oil level in the instrument cluster.

Mine is bouncing between 3/4 and full right now. It's probably sitting right between and is within the uncertainty of the sensor.

The gauge does work. It went from green to yellow in the iDrive screen and I got the add 1 quart message when my oil filter cap leaked.

Does it display overfill in iDrive, the cluster, or both?

Of interest anyway on another forum website, (an easy google search will find it), there is a discussion about adding a dipstick to the N55 motor - Only one car with N55 has one, it’s the M235i racing, only 170 were built. Involves draining the oil, removing the pan, drilling/ tapping a hole, etc.

My build was first of 2014 and s28i. Maybe your build of N20 is close to mine, since my indicator doesn't change either.

Yours s or x?

At 5k miles I changed oil, got out 4 quarts, and put in 5.

I think 5.5 would have been closer to right.

I should have at least shown 1 quart low before change.

I'll be changing my oil (first time) on my 2014 X1 (xDrive 28i) @ 32,747 miles. I purchased two 5qt jugs at $24.06 each (Castrol European Formula 0W-40).

Anyone know how I reset the oil service counter (I don't have the iDrive)?

Also, will 5qts suffice, or does this thing take 6qts? Manual doesn't specify.. so annoying. :-(

x28i with metal drain plug takes 6 quarts, and s28i with plastic plug takes 5.5 quarts.

I use a rectangular drain pan that lies flat with 2 plugs out, then, I close back up, and pour out of end into old jug, and see how much came out.

Excellent information. I have the metal plug.

Did you obtain this information from a reputable source, or is this personal experience?

Why they don't list this in the owner's manual is beyond me. :-(

Looks like I received the right oil. However, not sure if this is the correct filter. It has "Made in Mexico" printed on it and I was under the impression Mann Filter is German. :-(

Thoughts anyone?

So the oil change was a success!! The filter fit perfectly, and everything went smoothly. HOWEVER, I starting putting back into the 5qt container what I took out, and despite spilling a little that thing had OVER 6qt in it for sure. So I put back 6.5qt and the oil reading is as follows.

I really don't think 5qt would have been enough. Unless BMW grossly overfilled it. :-(

Hope everything turns out OK. So far, she's running smooth with no issues (fingers crossed).

PS: I'd venture to say she "appears" to be running much smoother. Of course, this could very well be butt dyno or placebo effect. 🙄

Congratulations on your first oil change. It's really quite easy. As for oil qty, 5-6 liters is a good start. Oil draining experiences differ due to various factors....if it's on ramps vs on all four jacks vs flat on the ground or one sided jack(bad!!!) or some other setups. Also the oil filter and the housing contains quite a bit of oil too. I would err to underfill a bit and check back after a few days of driving. Overfill is worse than underfill.

Thank you Gamb1t.

It was on Rhino ramps so the drain hole was positioned for maximum drainage. I also took the advise offered here and loosened the filter housing and oil cap (more oil started coming out). Additionally, I used the "measure what comes out" methodology to determine what should go in. Again, something I read here. I can safely say I put slightly less than what actually came out (I was accustomed to my MINI, and just couldn't believe all the oil she had).

The oil which came out filled an entire 5qt and 1qt jug to the rim (past the original oil markers). I spilled a little and poured about ½qt into another 5qt jug. That part had me scratching my head, so I put in 6qt and measured. The results showed a hairline below the max-line of the attached image seen here. Therefore, I and added ½qt more and this measurement (see image) is the end result (I stopped there). To be honest, this car probably had 6.6qt if I were to guess.

I maybe put in 6.4qt (if that) and I've seen a few places online and here calling for 6.1qt. In the following video, she flashes 6.1qt (she's pretty awesome, BTW). 😉

So far (fingers crossed), she's running nicely and as I mentioned before, "appears" to run/idle smoother, quieter (maybe butt dyno syndrome though). 😀

In closing, I will say next time I'll only use 6qt exactly. Kinda hard to measure how much 6 ".1qt" is from a 5qt jug. 😔

Finally, should I let some out? I'd rather be safe than sorry.

PS: I think this weekend I'll check the air filter next. I'm just under 33k miles.

For some reason, i put in 5qt on my xdrive 28i and still show full right after the change, after maybe 100-200 miles it shows halfway between the low and full. i added 1 more qt after that and it showed full for a while until after 3000 miles it suddenly show low.

i really would like bmw to put in the dipstick back.
