Widespread Connected Drive outage? Are you affected?

It’s no secret that the Connected Drive app and in-car services are, shall we say, glitchy and undependable, but the system reportedly has suffered a general outage at least since the beginning of this week.

Some reports associate this outage with an attempt by BMW to reprogram the entire system and a failure to bring it back up, but regardless, many users - including me - can’t get it to work at all now.

Some users say the outage also has knocked out their CarPlay capability. Some, including me, have been unable to use the in-car WiFi system.

Are any of you experiencing similar things? Alternately, are any of you finding that these service are working normally?

Thanks. That helps a little. It seems that certain categories of cars have retained their Connected Drive service - and others haven't.

I couldn’t get it to work for a while yesterday. I logged out and back in, and it started working. Could just be coincidence.

I just got my 850 and could not set up anything. Called BMW CUSTOMER relations and as my CA said, they have a server outage and said should be back up by early next week. I did tell them it is quite amateurish not to be able to fix this within an hour.

I believe that the 850 has special problems regarding ConnectedDrive. I've been troubleshooting this with various people at BMW. I'll report back if/when I figure it out.

Does your in-car Wi-Fi connect to the outside world? Mine doesn't. I think that's related to the ConnectedDrive screw-up.

Here in Florida, the Climatize Now pre-conditioning function can be particularly useful, when ConnectedDrive is working, which is practically never.

In addition, the Destination navigation function can be useful (though I know that there are other ways - in theory - to get destination addresses into the car).

Also, though no one at BMW seems to know for sure, ConnectedDrive may (or may not) need to function for the in-car wi-fi hotspot to function, and that's important to my grandkids.

Basically, I'm one of those weirdos who likes all the functions to function, sometimes just out of principle.

Just Another BMW Cluster

I purchased a new X5 in November that had so many problems the factory order me a new one and replaced it after four weeks. The connected drive is the buggiest thing I have personally dealt with since Windows 3.11. Now this outage. I can't use CarPlay or get any data over WIFI. I predict the initial quality rating of the 2019 X5 will land below Land Rover because frankly that is where it belongs.

I used mine yesterday to put in a nav destination and it worked perfectly. It also connected to my car and showed me the charge on my hybrid battery.

Thatís good news, though mine also handles destinations and car location, but nothing else.

Send it a remote order to honk the horn, flash the headlights or lock/unlock the doors. I hope it works, but it may not.

I was having these problems in December. If I can recall, I believe everything went okay after I deleted the App, reinstalled, and signed in.
