Exhaust smoke at startup
Has anyone else experienced this? After my car sits overnight or longer when it’s started I get a huge plume of white smoke from the exhaust pipe. If I drive it I don’t notice any and if I’m in and out of the car throughout the day I don’t notice it. Only when it sits for a while.
I took the car in for an oil change and I had them pull the codes. It needs the scheduled brake fluid service which was ridiculously priced so I’ll have the local BMW service place do that one. I also thermostat faults so they replaced the thermostat and topped off the coolant. The DME programming needed to be updated so I paid for that. Since that event no other engine lights have gone off and I’ve driven several thousand miles. The dealership wanted $412 to replace spark plugs so I’ll have the local service company do that one too! Back to the smoking? What are your thoughts and experiences? |

It is definitely oil smoke, very white with bluish tint IMO. Interceptor, I called the dealership and they made like they had never heard of it and wanted to make an appointment. I googled it and it seems to be started in 2012, mine is a 2014. I typed my VIN in on BMWs site and it says no recalls available.

I had this same issue earlier this year. Would experience smoke after car sat, especially over a weekend or few days. It's a known issue (at least by my BMW service center) w/the N20 engines.
Had the oil supply line to the turbo replaced under CPO warranty (along with a host of other items). Haven't seen any smoke since. |

I pulled my service invoice from 7/9/18. Could they make these things harder to read?
What is this section saying? Vanos faults stored in DME per SIB 12 15 13 the DME programming needs to be updated. Cause: Vanos faults in DME ENG Engine diagnosis/repair 55472 Vanos faults in DME 2.50 per SIB 12 15 13, updated the programming for the DME This cost $334.88 ????? |

https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=951773 Also here's the BMW part...around 50 bucks and maybe have an indie do it if dealer gives you a hassle. https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...IaAhRlEALw_wcB |

My indie wanted 1.2k to do this job (the high water mark). 9 hours is what he said.
It does involve removing the turbo according to this website: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...lines/FHUa9a7C Very bummed that BMW extended warranty does not cover the E84, but covers for virtually all other N20 cars. |

There's a way to get in there without removing the entire turbo (with the manifold) from the engine. I've never done it but I believe Dinan has instructions on how to get just the turbo housing out of the exhaust manifold in the event you want to upgrade the turbo..I think the instructions show how to "pivot" the turbo unit and reach the oil feed line.

Interesting, I found the manual and it states the following:
https://www.dinancars.com/product/D3...ries&mid=1182/ For rear wheel drive vehicles: These instructions discuss turbocharger replacement on an N20 engine without removal of the exhaust manifold. This is a much quicker process than the standard BMW turbocharger replacement procedure. The hardware included in this kit is designed for Dinan's shorter procedure. For xDrive vehicles: Due to limited access, turbocharger replacement on xDrive vehicles must follow recommended BMW procedure. Because the exhaust manifold is removed to access the turbocharger, additional hardware will be required for installation. Please have these components on hand before beginning installation, or contact your sales representative for Dinan hardware kit D313-0127. It looks like for my xDrive model I would still have to do it the original way |

At about 95,000 miles our X1 started doing that, anytime it sat more than overnight we would get a large cloud of oil smoke at startup. Dealer said no problem, no recall, no warranty, never heard of it, couldn’t reproduce it. So I ordered the new oil hose, started to install it but after getting close realized it was too risky for me. At about 108,000 miles it stopped, we are at 135,000 miles now and it has never happened again. The only thing I did was replace the wastegate actuator when it went bad at about 105,000 miles but I don’t think that has anything to do with it.

My mechanic told me yesterday that there were some oil lines that were leaking and needed to be replaced. Some of it got on to the air intake box and corroded the plastic (I can't remember exactly which part but he said i'll see the part numbers on the final print out) so that had to go as well.
Looking at 1600 whew..Most likely getting the car back either today or tomorrow. |

Total ended up being 1.7k with tax. 600+ on parts (lots of gaskets, new intake tube cause there was oil inside, 2 more coolant lines) and 1k on labor. No more smoking after sitting.

Here's the invoice. I used the PN provided above for the oil return line, everything else was needed as part of the replacement. The air intake tube had oil in it and had to be replaced as well.
