Next up: neutering your 0-60 unless you pay for “race mode”, speed limiting you to 75 mph unless you pay for “freeway mode”, etc.

Tesla already does this with their demo cars. Software locked acceleration and max speed of 80.

Start us easy BMW. Charge for the ring tone first.

Bluetooth will never be the same again.

Yes, they learned that you can't just dip your toes into the water, you have to just dive in. Doubling down on their earlier failure.

According to reliable online resources the F40 and F44 commencing July 2020 will come pre wired with high beam assist but you need to subscribe to it. Or have it coded in.

True but one is for the most part paying new content. Heated seats and other features are static.

In any case can you imagine having to have a heated seat element repaired out of warranty when you didn't even have a subscription for it?

As far as I know, the F8x (not sure about the F3x) already had adaptive headlights many years ago enabled for Europe but had to be coded off in North America because local laws didn't allow it.

I had some time to read over the brochure, in detail and what they're offering is not subscription based products, per se but a one time activation license, of features that wasn't on the original factory order.

So if heated seats wasn't originally optioned on the vehicle, in a future, a 'license' it can be purchased, as an option, after the sale. The hardware will have the feature, all built in but essentially locked out, via software.

Unlike Nexflix or Hulu monthly based subscription, BMW is offering a one time purchase, sort of like when you buy a digital copy of a movie, for permanent licensed viewing.

True. The F20 114i 116i and 118i were all the same engine and turbo. Just different tune. Components only changed from 120i IIRC or something.

Well, it won’t take long for some enterprising individuals to figure out how to unlock these features for free or a fraction of the price.

I know many of us used services like this to get CarPlay.

If that's the case then - much ado about nothing here. This makes some sense at least.

Exactly. If that is what BMW is doing, I am all for it. I had to order my last BMW because I couldn't find anything on the lots that met my desires. With this model, I will more likely be able to find cars with features I want. Paying once for it is what we all do when we buy a car; this is just another way to do that.

I would appreciate having that option for Android auto in my M2C.

That's not what this articles says:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/bmw-wants...200315059.html

In short, heated seats will be a 3 year subscription.

Everyone is fixated on this three year, heated seats headline, however, there is no direct quote from BMW and they're still being vague on all on their prices or model structure. Yet, the media just ran with this incendiary subscription theory because it raises eyebrows and induces click-baiting. Gotta love the internet..

From what a gather, some options that can be offered in a subscription base model, will be available but a lion share of the available aftersale options will only incur a one-time charge, instead of a regular monthly subscription.

BMW is already currently offering this, the press release was merely just to announce that they're expanding these aftersale options.

So I'm not sure why it's such a surprise to some, since they're acting like the sky is falling..

All offerings in the ConnectDrive menu gives you the options for a permanent, "one-time purchase" for any of the features or services offered.

Not in the US. American BMW owners would not put up with that bullshit
