A $7,000 Transmission!!!
So I purchased my BMW from a local BMW dealer Sept. 2018 with 27k miles (one owner). It's been running great, no fault codes and December 1st I changed the oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin filter.
I took it in today for a complimentary checkup and possible 30k mile maintenance. I mentioned when I backup I would hear a faint "wine". Like when you backup a car at an accelerated rate but much lower sound and just barely backing up. Well, I went shopping at the local mall with my mom (today is her birthday), when I get the call from the service advisor. He said the car needs two things: 1- A wheel alignment $189.99, and ... 2- A NEW transmission!! I asked him how much the transmission repair would cost and was told BMW doesn't repair transmissions, they replace them. When I asked how much, he said $7,000.00 and warranted for 2 years. AMAZING!! When I asked him how this happened, he said it's a faulty internal bearing which caused this and it's no fault of the operator. I said if there's a faulty part shouldn't BMW cover it? His reply was the car is out of warranty. Thank God, I purchased an extended warranty. They're sending an adjuster to verify the claim. Anyone ever hear of such atrocity? Also, I feel BMW May have sold me a lemon (I've only had the car 3 months!) Any thoughts?

Is your extended warranty through BMW or another aftermarket company? More than likely they will repair the issue and not replace the transmission. Also it sounds like he was giving you indirect advice. BMW won't fix it but someone else could and you wont have to spend $7,000.

Yeah, it's funny that BMW knows the bearing is faulty, but won't fix any out of warranty. Too many things are like that, and most car dealers don't repair engines or transmissions.
If it was my $7k, I'd look to get one out of junk yard, and have a machinist rebuild bearing in that one, then, swap so not much down time. I live in oil fields of West Texas, and you can buy any type, size, or brand of bearing, and make nearly any piece of metal, even crankshafts. Improved durability of parts is the kind of mods I do. |

Better do some research as the zf8 is usually quite hardy. Can't say I came across many issues with this tranny. Now the transfer case is another matter....

No CPO. Should be interesting to see what they put on that printout when it's all said and done. They had me bring back the 5 series (said it was sold), and put me in a 2019 X3.
Said the adjuster was scheduled to come today to authorize the repair. If authorized he'd order the transmission Monday and it takes "2 days" to complete the work. Haven't heard anything so I assume it's being ordered. No calls from the service department yet. Please forgive me as I'm still trying to put my stomach back where it belongs. It's lodged in my throat. I feel so sick. 😡😡

RESULTS: Picked up the car (a week later) and it seems OK. I still hear noise (could be engine and/or transmission) but maybe that's because I became accustomed to the x3 3.0 loaner which was newer (2019 with 1k miles) and much quieter. The insurance DENIED the claim for reasons noted on the slip.
At any rate, check out the following images and let me know if you have any thoughts. Looks like alignment was off, but have you ever seen anything like the explanation for requiring a new transmission? Looks like they drove it 22 miles (with the adjuster maybe) to check it.

So what is expected to happen to the transmission long-term now? Did they tell you it will just fail one day, or start slipping in gear? I'd get a 2nd opinion honestly, that entire episode with the dealer sounds really strange to me.
