X1 Cruise Control Retrofit

Hi,

New to the forum so bear with me, had a quick search and can't see a thread that covers this.

Ordered my X1 2.0d S-Drive several months ago and is due for delivery next week. It's a company car and through our car agent's. I'm going to be doing a fair few miles in it and am kicking myself that i didn't order cruise control.

I know it's early on for this model but does anyone know if it can be re-tro fitted ?

Update

Doing some digging it looks like cruise control can be retrofitted to most BMW's albeit more expensivly due to the additional labour involved e.t.c.

You used to be able to do it yourself (I did on my old Z4) but you can't anymore and need to have it done by BMW.

I was going to have it retrofitted on my 1 series but it was about £500 (best price I could get). So it can be done but as you say, its not cheap

Does this involve replacing the whole steering column since that is where you activate the cruise control?

Garage List
2011 BMW X1 23d  [7.66]
I'd imagine it would be quite the task these days with the "active" cruise control, which also applies the brakes when required.

I am new to this forum and it looks like this post is quite old but I thought I'd try my luck anyway.

I too am looking at getting (Standard) Cruise Control [S540A] retrofitted on my 2013 BMW X1 E84, 18d sDrive Auto.

Has anyone had any experience of actually getting this done successfully (or unsuccessfully).

Yep, I've a 2010 E84 20d SE Xdrive that (amongst a load of other things) I had cruise retrofitted to about a year ago.

Relatively simple to do (certainly simpler than the 6NR retro)

You'll need

lower dash cowl
cruise enabled slip ring (there are several different types, make sure you get the right one for your car)
lastly you'll need it coded, I used a chap from the South Coast who travelled to me as I gave him a full days work with all the retros I had him do.

According to my cost monitoring for the car, the cruise retro cost me a total of £138

Wait a second. There are really some newer BMWs that don't have cruise control or are you talking about adaptive cruise control?

Indeed there are many - in fact in 2010 (when my E84 was new) I'd say most mass-market BMW didn't have cruise of any kind (adaptive cruise didn't even exist in 2010 afaik) so the retrofit is a common desire.

Cruise was an official option on that age E84, just not one that many purchasers (especially in the UK, where cruise is still considered by many to be a dark art) actually specified.

I am shocked to hear that. I have only owned a small handful of vehicles but they all had cruise control.

Only in US cruise control is standard equipment. Along with other electronics. Making it more affordable.

I'm actually looking for anyone who knows if there is a possible way to add active cruise control to a 2014 x1 35. I would pay quite a bit of money for that. I do tons of highway driving.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post.

Based on all the research I have done there are specialists willing to do the cruise control retrofit, but they want to charge me north of a 1000£.

If you wouldn't mind could you please answer the following:

1. Did you source the parts yourself (did you buy them used or new)?
2. Did you do the installation of the parts (SZL/Slip ring ..etc) yourself?
3. Did you have active cruise control - with break function (SA544) or standard cruise control (SA540) coded.
4. Could you give me the name/contact of the guy who did the coding for you?
5. Did you have to take the instrument cluster into consideration when doing the retrofit. (Apparently there are 2 types that the X1s shipped with and its possible to retrofit on one but not the other)
6. Out of curiosity what else did you get retrofitted on yours?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Cheers!

Apologies Umair, I only just checked back into this forum and saw this message..

1) Yes, all parts sourced myself from Ebay
2) I didn't, I had a chap do a number of retrofits in one day for me (cruise, folding mirrors, 6NR etc)
3) Standard cruise, AFAIK active was never available on the E84
4)Simon Chodorowski @Bavarian Coding, you'll find him on Facebook
5) This is the reason why you've been quoted £1k for the official refit, on an E84 with factory cruise, there's a little green light that comes on when cruise is activated... on a non-cruise E84 a different cluster was fitted without that green light.... I can't say as how I've ever needed a green light to remind me that my feet aren't on the pedals so I wouldn't let that worry you.
6)Electrochromic Folding wing mirrors; late model combox with full 6NR armrest integrated phone system with connected drive, apps, internet etc; towbar with full factory integration, hardwired dashcam, permanent live power for garmin nav, front mounted integrated light bar...
I also had some things like instant MPG and digital speedo coded into the cluster.
I was going to have the Head-up-display as I really liked it in my 'Vette, but the BMW solution is properly naff so I haven't bothered.

Ironically this is probably the most "non-OE" car I've ever owned, but the amount of time I spend in it, it pays to be comfortable.

Next up will be the factory reversing camera and the front seat backs with the net storage.

derekmines No worries, thanks for getting back to and answering all my questions.

I've managed to source the cruise control parts from ebay and am looking forward to getting them installed and coded.

I did find and contact BavarianCoding on facebook before getting onto this forum, but I haven't heard anything back from them.

I did find als_customs on ebay and they referred me to: https://keepyourcarsafe.co.uk and have received positive responses from them.

A very interesting list of retrofits and I completely agree with spending money on things you use the most.

I also plan get the following retrofits:

1. Front PDC upgrade
2. Heated Steering
3. Base stereo to HiFi stereo
4. Xenon Headlights with DRLs

Looks like the earliest appointment I can get for Cruise Control install is Next month.

I will update this thread after my visit. I hope it all goes well.

Thanks again!

Hello Umair, I am looking to do the same as you with the cruise control retrofit, I know I need a cruise control enabled slip ring and lower dash cowl, however I am struggling as to exactly which model or part number I need to buy. I have searched on eBay for an e84 slip ring but can’t seem to find anything. Would you be able to tell me exactly which model or part number slip ring you purchased and where from? Much appreciated, Thanks in advance Daniel

Hey Daniel,

Welcome to the club

I don't want to discourage you but it took me about 5 months to figure out the exact parts I needed and find them on ebay. I hope I can help you bring that time down, but you have to be patient. I still haven't had everything installed and running on my car so I can't say my search is over (but fingers crossed)

BMW doesn't make it easy to retrofit optional extras on their cars.

Step 1: Get/find the VIN for your car. http://vehicleidentificationnumber.c...in-number.html
Step 2: Goto http://bimmer.work and enter the last 5 digits of your VIN.
This will give you all the configuration options (familiarise yourself with the option codes they will useful in step 5)
Step 3: Goto to a BMW parts website, enter you VIN and search for the available parts. I use the following sites:
* https://www.bmwautoparts.net/
* https://www.etkbmw.com/bmw/ (This is my preferred option)
Step 4: Browse through the parts categories. You will find the Switch Cluster under "Vehicle Electrical Systems"
Step 5: This is where it can get confusing and frustrating. Based on the configuration options of your vehicle you will
need to find the right part. Factors to consider (multi-function steering, Auto-rain sensing wipers).
Step 6: Once you have the part number start searching on ebay as you might not find it readily available and it may
take a while for your specific part to come on sale.
Step 7: Find a garage retrofitting service to install the parts and code the car.

To summarise the part number will depend on the build options of your car and the above steps should help you figure out the correct part number.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers!

Hello Umair and thanks for the welcome!

I was starting to think i was doing something wrong after not being able to find anything after 3 days lol, so i guess it all makes sense now.

I have just used bimmer.work to try and find out all configuration options for my car, however this is where i got a little confused, after looking through the list i couldn't see an option for cruise control am i right in assuming that cruise control must be on this list in order for me to have it retrofitted and coded onto my car?

This is what i have managed to find out:

http://bimmer.work/vin/ac335cfa08236...de1530ec31df3/

Thanks Daniell

Hey Daniel,

You won't see cruise control on the list for your car, because it wasn't selected when it was built from new. This is a list of options that your car was built with. It will not show all the options possible for your car.

The reason why its important to know the current options on your car as it will determine the corresponding Slip ring / Steering switch cluster you will need to select.

For example, there are 8 configurations of switch clusters:
1. Switch with (249) = present, (521) = present, (544) = present
2. Switch with (249) = present, (521) = present, (544) = absent
3. Switch with (249) = present, (521) = absent , (544) = present
4. Switch with (249) = present, (521) = absent , (544) = absent
5. Switch with (249) = absent , (521) = present, (544) = present
6. Switch with (249) = absent , (521) = present, (544) = absent
7. Switch with (249) = absent , (521) = absent , (544) = present
8. Switch with (249) = absent , (521) = absent , (544) = absent

key:
Multi-function Steering : (249)
Rain-sensing wipers : (521)
Cruise control (with braking) : (544)

by looking at your options list it looks like:
* Your current configuration is #4
* The configuration you need is #3

Based on the information I have I believe the part number you are looking for is:
* Current part number : 9123050 (61319123050)
* Old part number : 9110895

http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E8...eering_column/

Please physically check all of the above features before proceeding, because sometimes BMW vin databases can have incorrect entries.

Now, I forgot to mention this in my earlier post but if you are planning to get cruise control retrofitted you need to be aware of the fact that BMW has 3 types of cruise controls systems :

1. Standard Cruise Control : (540)
2. Cruise Control with braking function : (544)
3. Adaptive Cruise Control : (541)

Cruise control with braking function was the only type of cruise control option available on the X1-E84 *from factory*. However, I have been told that both 540 and 544 can be retrofitted.

If you want cruise control with braking (544) you might have change your instrument cluster too. There are two configurations of instrument cluster that was fitted on the X1-E84. I have read various reports where 544 works both, only with and also without, the upgraded instrument cluster (also referred to as KOMBI).

I believe 540 can be coded on-to the standard cluster, but you only get a slash screen on the KOMBI to indicate cruise control has been activated. On the upgraded KOMBI you get a dot on the speed dial to indicate the cruising speed.

Read post #14 and #15 above for more details.

Cheers!

Hi Umair

I finally get it! you weren't joking when you said BMW don't make it easy!! I have double checked the part numbers you provided and they are a fit for my vehicle.

I think i will be going for the (544) option and hopefully should be compatible with my KOMBI, or may look into purchasing and upgraded version if the money makes sense! which option have you gone for? and when are you planning to have everything installed?

Let the search begin!

Once again thanks for your all help,

Much appreciated

I'm keeping my options open and will decide on the day based on what is possible:

Its useful to know that installing a used KOMBI is not very straight forward. It requires virginsing (clearing the mileage and VIN) of the instrument cluster which "apparently" requires specialist equipment EEPROM writer (besides the standard coding tools). In case it is not possible / feasible to install the upgraded cluster I might choose option #3 below:

1. Preferred option: Standard Cruise Control (540) with upgraded KOMBI

2. Factory option: Cruise control with braking (544) with upgraded KOMBI

3. Worst case option: Standard Cruise Control (540) with base KOMBI

I will update this thread once its all carried out. Hopefully it all goes well *fingers crossed*
