Thermostat Warranty Extension
Hey Everyone
Just wanted see if anyone else had received notification from BMW of America announcing that they are extending the warranty for the thermostat to 10 years. Seems they have acknowledged it is an issue. I for one am glad that I have this extra protection. |

Just received a notice today on extending warranty for coolant thermostat. This letter stated is not a Recall or Service Action. No CEL light so not sure how one to know a defected thermostat. My gas mileage is around 25-26 MPG in highway. Is it consider low MPG for our vehicle? Wonder if we can complain poor gas mileage to initiate a thermostat replacement? |

With my X1 s28i 2014, I can get 23mpg on hwy with A/C on, driving 80mph, and front wind.
I have gotten 30 mpg with only difference the wind in the back. I've never seen a car that was so load dependant for good mpg. I also got 42 mpg for 70 miles at 70 mph with no A/C, and wind in back once. I think anything around 25mpg average would be great for a car of this power. |

No notice, but mine just failed on a 2015 xDrive28i. They must keep the thermostats in stock, as they only had my car for a few hours. Repaired under warranty, hopefully with an improved part.

I got mine changed 2k out of warranty. Told the dealer I had heard these were an issue. They said they had not seen or heard of any issues. I paid them to change it. 3 weeks later I got the notice in the mail. I submitted my claim and was reimbursed 3 weeks after that. Now the dealer wants me to come in for a $300 spark plug change. I did that myself for $60.00 and 1 hour of my time.

Well luck has it, that right after coming back from a long drive. 2000 miles overall, I get a service engine soon indicator. i think it is about the upcoming oil change interval and it ends up being the thermostat. So now I have a new one replaced under warranty. Only 29000 miles on the odometer.

Oddly, the car is reporting better gas mileage. Coincidence? |

Well now that you mention it, my gas mileage has improved. I think it has to do with the thermostat when it goes out stays in the open position keeping things cooler and not bringing the engine to its optimal operating temperature. Either way I am glad that it was replaced and under warranty, now if I can get my airbag replaced. Overall I really do enjoy driving the car. Hope it stays trouble free for many years to come.

At about 45K miles (about 4 months ago) the CEL went on. Brought it into the dealer and they replaced the thermostat. Gas mileage is still pretty poopy - 19mpg with about 80% city driving. Also replaced the plugs and air filter (myself) recently with no noticeable improvement is mpg.

I never got a letter either. Vehicle had been throwing codes and check engine light intermittently the last few weeks - I was able to clear all. Then, over the weekend “Service Engine Soon” came on and couldn’t clear it. It was the thermostat.

This isn't for the 35i's from the other thread's I've read, only the 28i's. Not sure why/what the diff would be, but I was under the impression it was a 28i issue. My 35i has no open recalls, even for airbag.

I have the x35i and I haven't received any notice too even for the bags. Will they replace it if it hasn't given up yet if I request for it?

Thermostat Recall
Canada just began fixing Thermostats. My light on an x1 2013 has been on for 2 years with the thermostat fail coming up during scans. It goes in for it's recall next week with a loaner car. The recall just got posted in the dealerships systems in Oct/Nov 2019.
