Rolled Odometer

I didn't think odometer modification was possible on new BMW's. I'm beginning to think otherwise.

I have a 2012 X1 x28i, bought with 22,000km on the odometer. Bought in Ontario, sourced from Quebec (which has little reciprocation between government motoring bodies - to validate history).

I now have 42,000km.

My new mechanic looked at my rear brakes which are 99% worn and need replacing. The front brakes are OK.

He thinks the odometer may have been rolled back and front brakes replaced at some time, as this wear pattern is not typical. Also, there are cylinder misfire codes, not typical of an engine of this age.

Lastly, Carly for BMW shows engine hours very high, for the reported KM's. (by calculation, average speed is 20km/h).

I didn't think rollback was possible (due to different modules grabbing km's periodically), but now I'm less convinced.

Any thoughts?

I just purchased a 2014 x1sdrive 28i with 48, 000 miles, BMW inspection completed, original back brakes are within spec, front rotors and pads replaced by previous owners prior to me buying the vehicle. Can’t comment on misfires or or odometer roll back. Did you run a vin check ?

When I look at my service history, I see that my rear brake pads were the first to go..

Our DTC (traction control) system on these cars uses the REAR brakes to shift torque around. Also, the rear brakes will be used by cruise control when going downhill.

Lastly, light/partial braking will send brake force to the rear as to not cause the car to dive. Hence, lots of highway driving will cause more rear pad wear vs. front.

Yes - In ontario it is required to run a VIN check for a legal sale.
However, there are different classes of VIN check services. The lowest cost is a UCDA search, which only pulls the government registrations. Other services check for insurance estimates and claims.

The search I was provided with was the UCDA search - which listed only the first 2 years of registration. The rest.... is a mystery!

Did you try Carfax, shows they are in Canada as well as US. Typically will show service at dealers as well as registration. Used a lot in the US when buying used cars.
