To Run Flat or Not To Run Flat
Hi, new member here. Looking for opinions on runflat tires. Personally, I'm not a fan. My 911 and my AMG both have space saver spares which are the perfect balance between real estate and performance.
My 2013 X1 is the first run-flat spec car I've owned. I immediately peeled them off and replaced with Pilot Sport AS3+. Are there any decent runflats out there? |

You put the correct tires on it (assuming you need an all season)

What people don't understand is there's so much difference in strength between OEM 35 psi or 44psi tires and speed rated H, V, W and Y tires.
I used to run only H rated 130 mph Uniroyal Rallye 240 tires, and I'd find occasional nails after they were worn. They seemed like I'd need air once a month, but not a problem. I replaced my run flats on 14 X1 s28i M sport with Michelin PS4S, and have no worries. I'm not gonna drive flat at reduced speed anyway. I have 6.5 inch bottle jack, jack stand, portable air compressor, and 17mm socket in the car. If flat call tire company and send wheel for a new tire or just tow out. I got roofing nail in Michelins on other car, and it held air for over a week, so I aired up, and drove to Discount Tire. |

No, you made the right switch. I run the AS3+ on my X1.

I prefer go-flats.
That said, the X1 is mostly driven by my wife. Therefore for peace of mind we continue to use runflats (Continentals) on her car. I just want to make sure she can at least make it to a safe place (ie tire shop) if not back home. |

I haven’t made the switch myself yet, but I’m going to. I haven’t quite figured out what my backup plan will be (AAA, plug kit, fixaflat, etc) but One thing is for sure, I’ll be happy to be rid of the runflats.

On my x1 there were flat tires from continental on it. Now I have normal tires on it because the run flat tires are too expensive for me. Up until now I couldn't see any difference

Just noticed this thread, I recently posted on this issue. I'm not sure what to do either, by far the RF's are heavy AF and I find it noticeable in performance and sportiness. They did come in handy though when I caught a nail and slow leak over the summer. I'm running Non RF's in winter with a lighter rim, can really feel the diff. It's a great question though, from what I can tell, RF's are just not performance oriented.
